Saw it today and thought it was great. I was expecting more Batman related Easter eggs though. One of the detectives interviewing him could have been Gordon, they could have had Jack Ryder as one of the reporters, maybe a Hugo Strange cameo at Arkham, just a few little touches like that would have been nice. This story didn't need to be about Joker or set in the DC universe. Other than Joker and the Wayne family I didn't notice any other Batman related lore.

Also thought it was kinda weird that Joker is about 35-40 years older than Bruce. I never thought of Joker as an old geezer going up against Batman. I also don't see this version of Joker as a criminal mastermind down the road. He's got the motive of being resentful of society but he doesn't seem like the type to plan out big crimes.

He said he doesn’t do franchise films, which I took to mean major studio films. My misinterpretation.

They said that Penny had worked for Wayne 30 years prior, and she adopted around that time. Bruce is 10 in the movie, that makes the age difference 20 years, which is similar to the gap between Keaton and Nicholson’s characters.

I don't remember if they said Arthur's age but he's got to be younger than Phoenix actually is. He looks like he's in his mid 40s but I guess the character is younger. There's no way he passes for a 30 year old.

Little dude was in Game of Thrones. He was in the plays as Tyrion in Bravos.

I don’t think anybody gives enough credit to that automatic exit door for creating the Joker.

They are going to have a hard time getting Phoenix to agree to come back, he has no desire to do franchise films

There’s a recent interview he does with Peter Travers on YouTube where he said who knows what else they could do with this character and that he’s open to working with Phillips again. Didn’t say he would want to be in “franchise” films, but also didn’t say he wasn’t doing another one with this character

Although I think the Joker is more interesting without a backstory (and that was part of the intrigue of Ledger's Joker) I did like the film.

Ledger's Joker reminds me of a flamboyant version of John Doe from Se7en. Two extremely intelligent individuals with no backstory who are willing to kill and die themselves just to make a point about society - and what they believe makes some sense when they discuss it.

GODDAMN, I LOVED THAT MOVIE.

They nailed it down to little details like you rarely see Arthur walking downhill until he makes the full transformation. When he's fighting who he is, he's always trudging and fighting his way uphill, up staircases, etc. When he finally loses it completely and stabs the guy in the throat and quits fighting who he is and embracing it is when you finally see him walking downhill, dancing lightly down the staircase as full-blown Joker.

One of the other touches I noticed in Phoenix's portrayal is that weird flatfooted way he runs. Arthur is a professional clown. Think about how clowns walk and run because of those giant arse shoes they wear. It would be second nature for Arthur to run that way after so many years as a performing clown. Phoenix nailed the character down to that level of detail.

Also, was anyone else kinda shocked the first time you see Arthur without his shirt on and realized how much weight Phoenix lost for the role? It was like the first time I saw Christian Bale in The Mechanic or Tom Hanks in Cast Away.

ETA: The Machinist, not The Mechanic.

I loved it. First time in my life I ever applauded at the end of a movie. It was a slow build, but I didn’t mind at all. I rated it a 9.5/10. I had it a 10/10 up until the very end. I wish they would’ve just ended with him standing on top of the squad car, as his ascension to criminal kingpin begins. The last 2-minute scene was unnecessary imo.

If anything, the person interviewing him in that final scene should have been Dr Quinzel.

Here’s Phoenix saying he can’t stop thinking about the role and that if there were more to do for the role, he wouldn’t rule it out just yet. However, he has not had a dream of being in a scene with Batman.

Nah Harley probably isn't alive yet. Bruce was like 10 years old and Bruce has at least 10 or 15 years on her

Y’all need to pay more attention because the director has already said they’ll consider another movie if he and Phoenix have a compelling story

It has to have Batman in it to some degree. Can you really do a sequel without some kind of presence?

I think it would need to include Bruce but not necessarily Batman. He could be a child to teen— I’m sure they could develop material regarding Bruce investigating this person who he blames for his parents’ death (joker mask), Joker maybe telling him they’re brothers, etc.

It'll need to be like 10 or so years into the future because Bruce is a kid right now

Man, when I found out Phoenix was going to be the joker I was pretty stoked. I felt like I saw their vision and “got it” before I ever saw him in the makeup.

BUT

I never could have imagined that they would finally get that straight up lunatic joker from the comics brought to the big screens and holy shite did JP nail it.
