Joker's having a strong second weekend. Looks like it'll do 300 mil domestically, and about 800 WW. Unbelievable.

If Phoenix doesn’t win the Oscar for this role I’ll be really surprised. He is one of the premier actors of our time. His amazing portrayal of a mentally ill sociopath is really remarkable. The scene where he murders Randall in the apartment was over the top gory and disgusting. I couldn’t watch it. Call me a pussy or whatever but I can handle dramatizations of murder by any means other than stabbing. Arthur lived a really bleak and poverty stricken existence. I automatically think of the Pearl Jam song “Black” when I think about the events of this film. As a parting shot, Thomas Wayne was a supreme a-hole. He was the perfect depiction of an arrogant, self absorbed, greedy and morally bankrupt elitist prick. Yeah frick it, I said it.

i think this is the second film ever that has made me feel something in my gut. Doesn’t matter that you know what its gonna be about before you even see it.

So exactly how old is the joker here? Is batman fighting a 70 year old mental patient in this universe?

The only thing that I somewhat didnt like was that I didnt think Phillips did a good job of building Gotham City. It just seemed like New York City in the 70s. Gotham has always kind of been a character all to itself in previous movies and I just didnt see or feel it here.

Bruce Wayne is 10.
Arthur was adopted as an infant or toddler when his mother was leaving the Waynes 30 years prior.
So you’re looking at a 25 year old Batman vs a 45 year old Joker.

Did anyone else tear up a little when he stood on top the cop car?

It was more emotional for me than Nicholson's "Wait'll they get a load of me." scene.

They’re catching shite for that too. Garry Glitter is a convicted pedophile and that song has been banned from most sports venues.
Some critics are saying it’s part of Phillips’ intentional plan to sell tickets through controversy instead of art.
just saw it this weekend and i think that song (and its questionable IRL background) worked PERFECTLY for that scene. its supposed to make you feel uncomfortable and it succeeded.

$55 million domestic weekend

Just saw it last night. I didn’t think it quite lived up to the 70’s movies it’s paying homage to, but overall I enjoyed it. I’ve been over origin stories for a long time but they managed to make a more than satisfying one with an iconic character.
JP obviously did an amazing job, though I thought some of the choices were a tad on the nose. Example: it was clear when he walked into the girl’s apartment and she reacted the way she did that he imagined their relationship, we didn’t need to be force fed her disappearing from various scenes she had been in. There’s a lot of stuff like that in the movie that annoyed me.
That said, if we’re just comparing it to comic book movies though, it’s up there with Logan as the best ever. That’s a low bar though.

Some say they won't watch it again. I think I will. So much is open-ended.
I read where the director said the Joker had three laughs. The medical condition, the one where he tries to fit in (which the director liked the best) and the very last one in the nut house, which he says is the only genuine laugh he makes.
In retrospect, I sensed what the director is saying during the movie and would like to watch it again for things like that, plus other elements of acting and the story line because it is so stunningly well done.

I enjoy a good dark movie and good god was this dark.
Not sure how Phoenix doesn't win an Oscar for this performance. It was flawless and it freaked me the frick out.
He had a pretty great warm-up performance in You Were Never Really Here as well, if you haven't seen that one yet.

I'll give it a go.
I didn't downvote you, but I did enjoy the scenes of showing the scenes you initially saw, but now without the actual people in them. It showed it wasn't just in his mind, he was having audible conversations and reacting to people who weren't even there.
Obviously, there's a big difference in just imagining things in your mind -- and actually seeing things that are not there in reality.
I believe that was the point. I thought it was a great way to show the extent of his lack of mental stability.
It was actually pretty chilling to me to realize these scenes were going on "completely" to the Joker, but in reality without the actual people he was reacting to really being there.

Nah, that may have been the case had that been the only example but they beat the audience over the head at almost every turn for 2/3rds of the movie because they didn’t trust people to get what they were doing. Almost no subtlety at all, it really drags on the movie through the 3rd act and JP generally are so good it’s not quite as big a deal as it otherwise would be.
Again this is comparing it to award level movies. If we’re just talking comic book movies then it’s easily Top 2 all time next to Logan.
