If Hollywood can get back to making good profits on smaller budgets, why would they be terrified?
Also super hero IP, in general, is making the super budget thing pretty risky. Spider Man is going to print money but plenty others are not doing well (like Supergirl).
These things flow back and forth. After the excess of the 70s you had a wave of cheaper movies in the 80s (not just because of the auteurs bankrupting studios, but it played a major role...and while VHS did create a demand, the 60s and 70s had similar demand for drive throughs)

I didn’t read it that way at all given the previous instances in the movie where it was clear Nikki was aware of what was going on
I see it similar to the sunken place in Get Out where they are witnessing what is happening but cannot stop it outside of times where they can briefly come to the surface or find ways to communicate through it
The note in the lunch box, her telling him to kill her and that they’ve never been together, all points to me that she was fully aware of what is happening and the emotional release when she’s freed is a mix of relief to be out of that situation, dread on the consequences that are going to follow, and confirmation that everything is real and all her friends are dead by her hands despite not having any control of everything

Yeah I think the instances of Nikki beating herself was the real Nikki fighting back possibly just trying to kill herself especially since it's what she asked Bear to do when she actually could talk to him

Yes, the original ending had everybody die as has been said but I also read they only gave her one take of the version we got where she lives. So unfortunately it may not have been as thought out as what they originally intended. In other words I’m not sure there’s much you can gather from it.
And if you really want to dig deep then would it even make sense that in that brief moment before she turned back should she have even been trying to kill herself. If she’s still maintaining the wish at that point then killing herself would go against it because she’d no longer be able to love him more than anyone else on the planet. Or did it realize it was about to go away anyway?
Sometimes I wonder if writers ever intend for audiences to over-analyze their material in this way because it seems ridiculous to try to examine it even more than they ever did.

I mean ultimately he did sell it to a major film distributor and production company that allowed it to be released in major theaters and those financiers ended up making off way better than barker on the movie.
He said himself he nearly just put it on YouTube, which likely would’ve made it pretty niche in terms of reach and led to much fewer dollar and cents on the bottom line

If they turn it into a franchise I hope they are careful with the wishes they use. The first wish was great in that it was kinda subtle coming into fruition. And it wasn’t hard to suspend your beliefs for it. But that money scene. It just didn’t fit. Not even sure what would’ve worked better but a billion dollars falling out of the ceiling just isn’t it. And they never even looked up to see where it was coming from.

It's the problem in modern horror of injecting comedy to avoid actually making real horror. It combined validating the wishes 100% and used comedy to cut the tension.
I'll take this over the Millennial Horror's subversive meta any day, though.

That could be fun.
Finally got around to seeing the movie today. Very good. I don’t know that I give it the “best horror movie I’ve ever seen” kind of nod but definitely good in that wish gone wrong part of the horror genre.
Inde Navarrette was excellent as Nikki.

Watched on Peacock. Didn't like it. Main gay was a dork. Could have just told her had feelings. Sarah was more attractive. Main actress did good job as crazy girl. 4 out of 10. Was good original idea.

It was originally supposed to have a pretty short theatrical run but was making so much money it stayed in the theaters for a long time so by the time it finally left the theathers, it was out pretty much right on streaming after bc the streaming deal started already

I just watched over the weekend. It was very good but I wish I didn’t have such high expectations going in based on the hype the movie got. Indie was very good once she went crazy but her character was cringe af in the beginning when they were trying to play her up as the cool girl that everyone loves. Probably more writing than her acting.
The end was interesting. Kinda Romeo and Juliet like.
