re: Obsession (Curry Barker)

Finally got around to watching this and wow did it live up to the hype and then some. I don't think I have felt that tense for that long watching a movie in an extremely long time not at least since Hereditary

The girl who played Nikki was absolutely fantastic and deserves a Oscar nomination at the very least if not just winning the thing. Pretty much all her scenes were amazing but what really got me was when she kept moving around Bear's room telling him to go back to sleep

Speaking of Bear man I tried to feel for the guy early on because I do absolutely understand having feelings for a girl and keep fricking up your chance to ask her out but after the scene where he talks to the real Nikki when demon Nikki is sleeping I was like ok dude that's fricked up

Obviously felt awful for Nikki who was a prisoner pretty much the entire movie only to finally be free when everyone else is dead and she is likely to be going to jail or to a psyche ward. But I felt awful for Sarah too because goddamn she did not deserve that death absolutely horrific scene while also being extremely tense despite knowing pretty much what was about to happen

As others have mentioned the fact that they didn't play it safe and went with everyone but Nikki dead was the smart move definitely will make it continue to stand out against other horror movies

Guess that’s debatable but the wish is “broken” when you die- which in that case him having a billion dollars is already broken when he dies because he no longer “has” it. Not sure that implies it would just vanish - otherwise I think that opens the door that basically everything that happened in the movie should’ve gotten reversed once bear died at the end


Also begs the question if he ended up spending enough to get down to less than a billion, does another stack of money fall to ensure he always has a billion?

They also filmed parts early on before the wish where they would have Nikki act like she was interested and then run a take where she was not interested and both versions got into the film in different scenes so there’s more ambiguity on whether she actually would’ve been into him if he had just asked her out like a normal person


Personally my read on it is that she was not interested at all and is one of those girls that likes being the friend of guys and toe the line on flirting and then act incredulous if the guy makes a move. Not speaking from experience or anything but their interaction at the bar was enough for me to be like “she’s never fricking you dude”

The first clue for me that Bear was actually a bad guy is when he calls the hot line. By this point he fully believes that the wish worked and that by doing so he essentially took away Nikki's free will. Rather than ask to cancel the wish, he asks if he's allowed to "alter" his wish. He would have still been ok with her being his slave as long as it wasn't burdensome for him.

Watched this last night with the wife before bed.

I know it had really good reviews and it lived up to most of that. Incredible production based on the budget. Shows how inflated budgets are in Hollywood movies and how things like comedy and horror can still be produced at affordable production costs. Hopefully this means we get more of them because the profits won't have to be as severe.

I give it a really good Rating, like a B or 7.5/10 or so.

Modern horror has a problem of not being scary and this movie falls into that.

However, modern horror has a problem of completely fricking up the ending and this movie did not fall into that category. It had the shocking good, complete ending. Couldn't ask for more out of the ending outside of one thing. My favorite scene in the movie was the scene where the real Nikki was sleep-talking to him. The fact that the real Nikki was hyper-present for all of this was truly effective at the real horror of the movie (the destruction of Nikki due to nothing she did at all, let alone wrong).

The reason the ending kind of conflicts with this is that when he dies and the wish dies, she should have been aware of all the terrible stuff fake-Nikki had done and the presented it as this horror was revealed to her once the wish wore off. It worked for the ending, and I give it that credit, but it also does conflict with my best scene in the movie.

There is so much "hiding in the fame" in this movie I have a question. In the one part where he's having sex with her, does her face seem uninterested (while her audible participation conflicts)? It came off that way to me and I thought that was intentional, and if true, does add some depth to the whole "layers of Nikki" going on in the movie.

I know what you’re saying but I don’t think she was always fully present to witness everything real-time at least not visually. A few things back that up.

The scene you’re talking about when she speaks to him it’s only because the possessor was asleep. And when he asks her if it would be so bad if they had to be together forever she replies “they’ve” never been together suggesting she’s blocked out from at least most of it. She could just be saying it’s not really her he’s been with but I still don’t think she’s sees it all. She does have bits and pieces though.

Also notice when the real her appears it always comes with a shock reaction to what’s occurring at the time. When she first kisses him and at the party. Like she’s seeing it brand new.

And when the customer service guy offers to let Bear speak to her all she’s doing is constantly screaming like she’s not following what’s going on on the “outside”. Incidentally had he held on the line there he could have had a conversation with her but he chickened out obviously not wanting to know what her thoughts were on the situation.

So I think when she actually appears she is genuinely shocked by seeing what’s going on so she likely isn’t actively monitoring what’s happening.

I would guess they're terrified. Instead of some boring retread of existing IP shot through with every woke trope one can imagine - including casting/production/etc. a 25 year old white kid COMPLETELY bypassed they system and made a movie people actually want to see.

Did anyone else think that Bear resembled like 10 different other famous actors throughout the movie? Colin Ferrel was one of them. Early on it was Joaquin Phoenix.
