I'm sensing an OK movie with some of these

The Odyssey: a surprisingly natural (and less despairing) Oppenheimer follow-up about a man haunted by defying the gods & dooming civilization - this one fights to avenge his own hubris. IMAX obviously immense. too clunky to be S-tier Nolan, but the last act rewards the journey.

Just take a gander at the early Supergirl reviews

I was already psyched for it, though

brilliant, subversive adaptation.

For me, he already telegraphed where he’s going with it with Helen and Travis Scott but this line really reminds me of The Last Jedi

I want this movie to be amazing but that quote scares me. It's not surprising though since by all accounts he's using the Emily Wilson feminist translation as the basis for his story.

My thoughts exactly. These "modern" takes sentences are subverting my expectations

Yes. I feel like some people will be disappointed if it isn’t a classic, but if it’s just a movie in the good to great range I’ll be happy.

There's some of that, but I don't think it's any stranger than the people who pretend that the controversy is CHUD astroturf. When filmmakers do this stuff they WANT the controversy, they want people talking about it. That's why they make the casting choices they make.

A lot of times that’s true. That doesn’t strike me as the case here with Nolan. I get the feeling he was somewhat baffled by the reaction.

It will have to suck pretty bad to get close to the steaming pile of The Dark Knight Rises.

Then he's way, way detached from reality. A lot of artistic types are so maybe that's the case here.

And even if he is, I don't believe he could have had a meeting with more than 3 people and someone didn't bring up the fact that casting a 90lb tranny as a Greek warrior or a solid 5 black woman as Helen might generate some negative buzz. Even if Nolan's in his own world, the money people are not. They knew this would generate controversy and that's what they wanted.

I don't think I've read a review before a movie came out in the past 10 years. The weird become a die hard fan or die hard hater before even watching the movie is just odd.

I think it looks good and I trust Nolan. I get some of the complaints, I hate the Helen of Troy casting. But I'm going to determine for myself whether it's good or not, not let some incel or movie snob determine whether I'm going to see it much less if I'm going to like it or not.

Everyone should do that. Unfortunately, we have large groups of people that are on the blue team or the red team and they must follow orders.
