The August 2019 issue of _Empire_ – on sale from Thursday 11 July – takes a world-exclusive look inside the low-budget, hyper-intense comic book movie – and according to Phillips, it’s going to be its own unique beast. “We didn’t follow anything from the comic-books, which people are gonna be mad about,” the writer-director tells Empire. “We just wrote our own version of where a guy like Joker might come from. That’s what was interesting to me. We’re not even doing Joker, but the story of becoming Joker. It’s about this man.”

"I just love the energy that a disruptor brings," he says when asked what appeals to him about The Joker. "So I thought, 'A Joker origin story would be cool; nobody's done that.' I read comics as a kid, I knew enough about Frank Miller and the Dark Knight series, and The Killing Joke. I also knew that he didn't really have an origin story, so I thought, 'Oh Jesus, are we able to do that, is it legal?"
More from Empire:

While you wouldn’t typically expect to see De Niro in a comic book movie – and this notably isn’t your typical comic book movie – it was Phillips and Scott Silver’s screenplay that hooked him in for the part. “Bob really loved the script,” Phillips tells Empire in the August 2019 issue. “I met with him and said, ‘I’d be lying to you if I said we weren’t influenced by a lot of your movies.’ I talked with him about _Taxi Driver_ and about _The King Of Comedy_, which is one of my favourite movies of all time.”
The King Of Comedy connection is a fitting one to draw. Scorsese’s 1982 film starred De Niro as Rupert Pupkin – a wannabe-comedian who kidnaps a talk show host in order to get his shot at the big-time. Now he’s playing the opposite side of that dynamic – and even a bomb scare, which occurred on De Niro’s first day of Joker shooting, when an explosive device was delivered to his production office in Manhattan, couldn’t stop him joining the production. “We had FBI guys showing up to search the set,” Phillips recalls. “And I thought, ‘Oh god, what’s he gonna be like?’ And he comes in like it’s nothing, just ready to rock, knew his shite. He’s amazing.”

It's going to be very divisive, but I think that'll work to it's advantage at the box office.

Joaquin is on the very short list of cats who can pull this off - IF properly supported by supporting cast, writing and direction.

I have a bad feeling this movie will not be good, which would really make me upset

I get the opposite feeling. I think its going to be awesome, but there are going to be a lot of people coming out confused and thinking its a Joker/Batman movie.

Honestly don’t like this Joker’s face makeup

I didn't realize that Todd "I'm here for the gangbang" Phillips was involved with this. I wonder if he makes a sexually-weird cameo in this movie.
Should make for an interesting flick, that's for certain.

latest images are a bit suspect IMO. Hard pass. Posted on 7/8/19 at 1:52 pm to RLDSC FAN
This movie is going to suck.

Yep, several of my coworkers asked me if he'll be fighting Ben Affleck

I don’t think the joker has an origin story per se so not being tied to a comic might not be a bad thing if written well. I personally like the idea but I don’t think it looks very good.

I mean, killing joke isn’t canon and was a one off right? Just think of this as the same thing, just their own version of what maybe could have happened.

Yes, you'll be hearing more casting news a/b The Batman soon, as calls have gone out for a whole litany of characters, especially a wide array of villains appearing in the film. Fans are gonna go nuts when they hear names & # of characters, Reeves is building a full bat-world.

As I said, they're already actively seeking actors for a bunch of roles, so I expect it pretty soon. I won't put a number or date on it, as I can't predict that. It depends on how soon they decide to reveal info or how soon details leak out.
But it's a LOT of characters.
A. LOT.

I think this sounds awesome but it's also going to turn a lot of folks off expecting to see Heath Ledger 2.0. I believe that a true hyper violent crime drama with the lead slowly becoming unhinged and maniacal heading down the path that the Joker we all know and love ended up at could be brilliant.
Really looking forward to this.

This does bring a smile to my face.

Why is that a bad thing?
B/c it makes it feel like they wanted to a do an 80s movie about crime, thought it wouldn't do big biz, and decided to slap Joker onto it to trick people into going.

I think a TV series of Joker telling different versions of his origin to an Arkham doctor would be awesome. Maybe one of the stories he relates is true, maybe they all share a kernel of truth, or maybe he has no clue who he is or where he came from. I just want to see a deep character study expanding on Heath Ledger's "You know how i got these scars?"

Is it at least taking place in Gotham?
