I'll be interested to see how well executed the movie turns out. The look and the casting are very good at first glance but even the bad comic book movies tend to look good in previews.

On a personal level I hope the Black Panther is portrayed as a great hero in the traditional sense. That is, his nobility and greatness are functions of his personal characteristics and the makers of the movie don't trap themselves into a more narrow message because of political or other sensibilities. The preliminary reviews being very positive makes me optimistic.

4 pages & no mention of black vs. white movie theater audiences. I'm not calling for trouble or problems, but sadly there will be problems with these audiences. At the very least, a secere uptick in complaints of 1 about the other's "viewing behavior". At least comedians will get to reuse some classic material.

Also, no one is going to bash Michael B Jordan's boy band terrible hair?!?!?

yeah, b/c it's fricking Wonder Woman, and it was a good movie, and despite what some people think, comic book movies are popular and people go see them in groves. She's an icon in the superhero world, like Batman and Superman and Spider-Man. You have to make a really shitty movie to not get near or over a billion dollars today with those 4 names.

My wife brought my daughter to see Wonder Woman. My wife had never seen a comic book movie without me.

Some theories
1) Some African tribes do scarification. The trailer showed a guy with a disc in his lower lip, which is another form of tribal body modification. (This is what I think is likely)

2) In the comics, his character takes a synthetic herb to give him the same powers as Black Panther. Maybe this is a side effect.

3) It's a nod to an obscure Batman villain. (this is a REAL stretch.)

I'm not doubting women went see it b/c of that, same with blacks going see Black Panther. What i'm saying is that it will make very little impact financially b/c the people that will do this are a very small portion of the total viewers of the movie.

Wonder Woman is a good movie. Word gets out that it's not hot garbage like BvS and more people are going see it, both men and women.
WW Box Office Holding Strong

quote:

That also means Wonder Woman will earn roughly 3.8 times the $103.3 million it collected when it launched over the June 2-4 weekend — the best multiple for the genre in decades. Currently, the film's multiple is 3.6, slightly ahead of the first Spider-Man in 2002. The first Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) was also a word-of-mouth sensation, sporting a 3.5 multiple, while Nolan's sequel, The Dark Knight (2008), powered to a 3.4 multiple.

It's a really good movie, that many people like, and werent' expecting all that much from, like GOTG. Word of mouth is why it's doing so well, not a woman lead. it could have been a shitty movie and still did $500-600M simply b/c it's a comic book movie and it's Wonder Woman. You make a good movie and then your floor becomes $800M and you can push towards $1B.

‘Wonder Woman’: Female and Older Moviegoers Powered Box Office, New Study Shows
quote:

“‘Wonder Woman’s’ audience evolved in a similar manner as most blockbusters but with some trends notably magnified,” noted Matthew Liebmann, Movio’s senior VP for the Americas. “While the female and 50+ segments of the audience generally grow over the course of the run, ‘Wonder Woman’s’ female audience nearly reached parity with the male audience by the third week.”
quote:

Liebmann told Variety that it’s unprecedented for a superhero tentpole movie to reach male-female parity at any point of its run — due to propensity of male moviegoers to support those titles. The average superhero movie draws a 62% male audience. “Even ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ which had a strong female lead with Daisy Ridley, never got closer than 56-44 male,” Liebman said.

Yeah anyone doubting WW's success at the box office is due in no small part to its "strong woman" appeal is delusional. It's not THAT good of a movie. It helps that it's a good movie but it also helps that it's about a female superhero. And is the first one. And is part of a universe that, despite its horrendous track record with critics, has been phenomenally successful at the box office.

Black Panther won't get nearly as big an uptick because we're talking about appealing to 13% of the population in black people and 50% of the population in women.

I not only don't believe it's a good movie, I don't care. I have lost all patience and faith with DC. It's too little, too late to make a good movie out of a character who is far and away less beloved than Superman and Batman. That would be like if Marvel's first few movies were about Spider-Man and the X-Men (probably Marvel's most popular franchises before the MCU took off due to the '90s cartoons - and yes I realize Marvel would have to have the rights to those franchises) and those movies sucked absolute arse, and then making a good movie out of Thor and expecting people to give a shite. Particularly with a no name actress/actor who can't anchor the franchise. If Chris Hemsworth were the lynchpin of the MCU rather than RDJ, we'd be looking at a shitty MCU. If Gal Gadot is the lynchpin for the DCEU, they're in trouble.

Here is some insight from you before you saw Wonder Woman. You do a good job at convincing yourself you're right in the midst of reality.

I am nowhere near the demographic you speak of and I can't wait to see Black Panther. It is a world that I identify with because I find it fascinating and compelling. If they make a good film it will surpass targeted demographics, independent of what you believe.

First off, i don't know how they determine what the ratio of men to women are in the theatres, but i seriously doubt it has any accuracy.
I'm sure it's true that more women saw this movie than Dr. Strange and GOTG and Suicide Squad, but they can't prove that. No one selects gender when you buy a ticket.

All that being said, if Scarlet Witch had her own movie come out this year instead of Wonder Woman, would it be doing as well, considering it would be the first female superhero lead movie? i don't think so, b/c Scarlet Witch, despite everyone konwing her now, is no where near as popular as Wonder Woman. Every age demographic knows who Wonder Woman is. Just like everyone knows who Hulk is, and Batman, and Superman, and Spiderman.
