Motherf&%#er

Chepak is saying this is a one off decision, but who knows. And with theaters bleeding badly right now, they were REALLY looking forward to the Mulan opening to help. It sounds like it was going to be a cash cow. Skipping the theater chains and going straight to VOD will hurt bad. If this starts a trend of studios skipping the big screen, theaters are done.

UPDATE: Disney is officially releasing Mulan only on Disney+. It will be completely skipping US theaters. To make the slap in the face all the stronger, they are changing their release date to the exact same day that Tenet releases. Literally doing the worst thing possible for theaters. frick Disney.

For $30 too. That is a killer deal. I will be doing that with my kids when it hits VOD.

It’s still hitting theaters that same day. Mulan will not be included with the Disney+ service. It will cost $30 to rent it on Disney+

I really wish theaters could reopen, but I'm pumped I don't have to wait anymore to see this.

Oh, nice. That’s better news I guess, but still, hopefully that doesn’t become the new standard either.

Just saw that deadline blurb that said it would be opening in markets where there is no Disney+ option, but I guess I should’ve done more research elsewhere to verify whether or not there would also be a US theatrical release. Will update my OP; thanks!

$30 is crazy high. But if you have a solid home theater and a family, I guess it’s pretty much the same.

Time to buy an 85 inch screen and Sonos Arc.

they're still adding an extra barrier to even rent the movie for $30 by making it through D+ only. Even if you were hyped to rent it but not a D+ subscriber, all those extra steps to even get a free trial will turn many people away.

They shouldve incentivized people to have D+ by keeping it $29.99 there, but allowing all the other services to offer it as well, but for $35 and not limit their own availability.

I'm guessing this Pew Research Center survey released last week played a part in Disney's decision:

quote:

Americans’ views of China have continued to sour, according to a new Pew Research Center survey. Today, 73% of U.S. adults say they have an unfavorable view of the country, up 26 percentage points since 2018.

LINK

I don't think there's currently much of an audience in America for a movie based on Chinese folklore.

I think it’s awesome to have the option to rent it on Disney+ I won’t be paying $30 as it is just the two of us but if some friends want to come watch and split the bill, easy decision. Otherwise I can wait until it is free. I love Mulan but nothing I have seen from the trailers of the live action have excited me.

With a lead actress who criticized the Hong Kong protests that have near universal support in the US.

Can you show me where you are seeing that it will still be hitting US theaters the same day? The only thing I’m seeing is that it will open in foreign markets where Disney+ is not an option. Not seeing anywhere saying it will open in US theaters.

That said, it’s also worth noting that Disney is releasing this the same weekend that Tenet opens. So a giant double frick you to theaters, putting a potential sizable dent into the first big opening in months

Let’s be honest here... if you’re Chinese and have family still tied to the mainland, and you trash the CCP as a major Chinese actor... your family is getting disappeared.
