If you have already seen the movie, don't bother reading the book. You won't gain any new insights to the story.

Nonsense. The movie left out the hitchiker, and more importantly the movie left out Sheriff Bell's WWII backstory. No Country is a great movie but the book is better.

True, but unless your just obsessed with the story it just felt like it was a waste of time after watching the movie.

It was almost like reading the screenplay with the parts you mentioned added in. I would rather have spent the time reading something else.

If it was worth it for you that's cool. Just a difference of opinion.

The Shining

The only book and movie that I loved each in their own way since they were different in some ways.

Understatement of the year. I can't think of another story that differed to that degree, and both the book and movie were both excellent.

Rear Window

The short story is forced to explain a lot of the heroes interior monologue. Whereas the movie doesn’t.

It makes the movie a million times better than the book.

So what are people's criteria, anyway? That would be an interesting addition to the replies. For instance, while I think "The Godfather" and "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" are interesting, I think the writing is strictly pedestrian, so picking the movie versions is easy. Hell, I'd pick almost, but not quite, any PKD movie over the book simply because PKD is a brilliantly original writer but not a particularly skilled one, so it takes a good movie to really realize his vision. He probably should have been a writer/director all along.

Jurassic Park the movie was great, but the book was phenomenal

IMO it's the other way around. The book is great but the movie was phenomenal in its time. The book was a bestseller but it wasn't absolutely shattering any records in 1990-1991. The movie was the highest grossing film ever at that time and still one of the highest ever adjusted for inflation.

The movie's blend of practical and CGI effects to produce realistic dinosaurs was absolutely incredible in 1993. Remember that people had never seen anything like it before at that time and were blown away by it. The movie changed what was possible for cinema.

I'm not saying it's a better version of the story or better storytelling etc. but the topic title doesn't specify - it just asks about movies that are better than the book and IMO the Jurassic Park movie is an incredible achievement whereas the book is an entertaining science fiction story.

Blade Runner is a decent amount better than Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. That is the only movie I can think of that I could say is much better than the books.

Its debatable but I'd say the Silence of the Lambs and No Country For Old Men movies are better.

To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite books of all time, and it could be argued the movie is better. That's the only example for me where a movie is arguably better than an all time great book.

Apocalypse Now, although not by much, since the book is also great.

I take it you are referring to Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" as "the book", as it is what Apocalypse Now is based on.

However, the substantial changes-- colonial Africa vs. 1960s Vietnam, colonization/exploitation vs war, make them substantially different stories... I don't think this really fits the category.

But both ARE great!

Don't think there was a movie of The Stand. There WAS an ABC miniseries in 1994...

Jaws

Anyone downvoting this has never read Benchleys novel. Hooper is a dickbag, Quint is not written as Robert Shaw, and Brody is an unlikable weenie. Honestly I was rooting for the Shark.

The movie is one of the best ever made, and virtually everything works.

The Hunger Games. Mainly because I thought they were some of the worst written books I've ever read (especially the third) with absolutely no depth. The movies at least gave the characters a bit of personality.

I really don’t know if there is a way for a film to surpass a book given that you only have 2-3 hours to pack in as much as you can. Even making a book or book series into a multi-part tv series cant capture everything (think GOT)

I mean, maybe Gone With the Wind?
