I wouldn't have seen any of these without MoviePass. There are easily at least three quality indie and other small releases per month that are worth $3.32 a ticket.

Nope. That's a deal breaker. I see major releases the opening Thursday or Friday.
Whoa, hold on, I read the press release the same way as you. Now Mitch Lowe is saying the new-release restriction is being removed. If true, that will be awesome.

After one week of analyzing customer responses and internal debate, Mr. Lowe said MoviePass is abandoning those changes. The price increase and restriction on new releases are being revoked, there will be no surcharges, and users will no longer have to upload photos of tickets they buy to prove they are not committing fraud.
Edit: OK, I got an e-mail from MoviePass at 3:30 pm EDT and it says this:
quote:
The new plan will include many major studio first-run films, however there will be some exceptions (note that theaters with e-ticketing will include all movies and showtimes with no restrictions).
So the press release was more accurate and Mitch Lowe was lying to the WSJ.

That was one of the main benefits of MoviePass. You didn't have to gamble money on seeing odd films.
There's a lot more to films than just categorizing them as either masterpieces or crap. Some years I would see 100 films on MoviePass. I could laugh at how horrible Kevin Smith's "Tusk" was because I wasn't really paying to see it. I could sample Bollywood films and see why they weren't just ridiculous cliched dance films. And I'd get to see small films with zero spoilage because they weren't promoted at all (but again, not a financial gamble for me with MoviePass).
But now MoviePass is going to be just another discount card to see the major releases.
The New MoviePass Plan Is A Disaster For Smaller Movies And Indie Flicks

if we were talking Mila Kunis from Forgetting Sarah Marshall, I'd be inclined to agree with you

All of these rapid changes and price jumps are just part of the MoviePass M.O. that they've operated under for the past six years:
1) frick things up
2) Revert to a less fricked up version that isn't as good as it was before you fricked things up
3) Hope that the remaining subscribers won't notice that your "fix" still leaves them with a shittier product.

Oh yeah I hadn't thought about that. 100% right, that's how I'm going to end up using it. It's a real shame, I really enjoyed seeing these smaller films.

No telling how many times they changed their policy between the press release and Lowe talking to the Journal. I’d imagine that he wakes up in the middle of the night and screams for the price to go up or for some restriction to be added.

You didn’t get the memo? Movies can now only be categorized as phenomenal or garbage. I believe that took effect around 2015 or so

I have the annual pass. Am I still able to see a movie a day without the limit of 3 a month? The email mentioned changes not affecting annual subscribers until their plans renewed but I wasn't sure if they meant ALL changes or just some. As an annual subscriber I have never had to deal with price surging but I have had to deal with movie blackouts. So it seems unclear what does and does not apply to those with an annual pass already purchased.

Honestly, with the cost of concessions everyone should get in for free just so the theater can sell more overpriced garbage.

Changes don't apply to annual passes until renewal

I will say that it survived for six years is an accomplishment. It was a failed model from the beginning and they are now coming to the realization there is not enough value in selling movie watching patterns to make up the difference.
We discussed it here in detail back in May, but MP was always doomed. MP should of made a play with the concessions. Huge markups on that and might of brought more theaters to their side.
Theaters are looking for sales lift and I do not know if MP sold that. If they could of worked in something with concessions (5%-10% off for MP customers) and shown a direct lift in sales from more MP customers they may have been able to negotiate a reduced ticket rate for MP patrons. Popcorn alone is a 806% markup, so shaving 10% off and increasing sales would be a win. People are suckers for any perceived savings. MP could be - we are putting butts in your seats and you are selling more popcorn.
Movie Pass was in a prime spot to link multiple distributors with multiple consumers. They needed to think beyond the insurance model and silicon valley personal data model. There is a lot to be said about the old increasing sales lift model.
Of course I could be completely wrong and they tried that and it did not work. There is a reason Costco and Sams are always giving out those free samples though. It works.

Their mistake was in trying to expand overnight instead of staying a slower course.
The system worked fine for five years with the $30 to $40 a month plan. Jumping to $9.95 a month was a Hail Mary that didn't work.
When Mitch Lowe took over, that's when things spiraled down. We got the countdown clock and he screwed over the "power users" by telling them they had to pay $99 a month to keep their memberships.
The Helios deal was the last straw. $6.95 a month was just whoring themselves out. At some point you're just asking theaters to block you.

All of the showtimes mysteriously disappeared when I got to the theater last night and I had to pay for it. I'm officially done now. Just too much crap to deal with.

This has happened to me on a few occasions so I made sure to go and get my tickets early in the day. I think when they hit a certain number they delete out showings. I also think they are happy to show you screenings but when you actually arrive to the theater they see your location and drop those screenings quickly.
I noticed today that I can now see Christopher Robin and Mission Impossible. They are no longer blacked out. Not sure if that would be the case once I arrived at the theater or if they just want me to think the service is getting better. Might swing by tonight just to see if the screenings still pop up when I am actually there.

At a happy hour near the theater so I decided to check what's showing.

The app has officially gone full retard

so for any of you that canceled before the last change to the TOS, be aware - the TOS change overrides your cancellation, and keeps the account active and you will be billed - unless you cancel again.
that is some shady fricking shite.

Wow
But how can new TOS affect you if you have already cancelled prior to the new TOS being implemented
