Now, a most hated movie character tournament would be fun. That could present a variety of options. For instance, Voldemort is the bad guy in Harry Potter but professor Umbridge is the most hated character in HP. I'm sure many people have their own characters they absolutely hated that are not the normal good or bad guy.

Yea that's true. There are a few that might compete but that probably wouldn't be the best because it's like you have a predetermined winner going in. Heath Ledgers Joker would probably give Vader a run for his money. But most of the fun in the tournaments come in the non finals matchups anyway.
I do like the most hated character though, that'd probably be pretty competitive.

It was not until we get backstory in the third movie and the prequels that he became even-remotely interesting, IMO.

I have pretty much the exact opposite opinion. I think Darth Vader was a way better villain before the prequels.
