Reading through the thread, Homer Simpson is getting lots of love.

As is Andy Griffith (so I assume Andy Taylor).

Lots of people are saying Jackie Gleason, but he's a real person, not a TV character. So I assume that to mean Ralph Kramden?

Archie Bunker also getting a good bit of mentions.

Naaaah.... if there's one thing this thread proves it's that Lucy is number one... and it's so not close she deserves her own mountain all by herself.

Frasier is, probably, my favorite television character of all time.

Lucy is almost synonomous with scripted television shows, particularly sitcoms.

I like Belzer's Munch character, but it's tough to put him in this company, quite yet.

Let's talk about Ozzie & Harriet, Matt Dillon, Archie Bunker, Hawkeye Pierce, Jerry Seinfeld (the character), heck, even Homer Simpson probably gets the nod over Munch.

Now - if it's required the character actually appear on a number of programs, that probably knocks out a number of the obviously more influential characters I named.

In that case, I at least take Archie Bunker and Mr. Worf over Munch.

Right now my locks are Lucille Ball and Jackie Gleason. I'm on the fence with Andy Griffith. While I love the character Frasier, as that is my favorite show of all time, I probably wouldn't nominate him for this, same with Matt Dillon. Longevity =/= GOAT.

Fonzie isn't a bad choice for iconic characters though.

for some reason I'm just not feeling Homer. And I'm not a seinfeld cultists either.

I wouldn't be against nominating a PBS character just to represent that genre. Hard to deny PBS' influence on TV.

I don't like that all of my nominees are sitcom folks. I guess there just aren't that many cross generational drama characters.

Damn you pulling up all those sitcoms.

Dan Feilding and Dick Loudon would be on my personal Mt. Rushmore.

Sitcoms are going to dominate because of the volume of them and the number of them that had extended runs.

I think we have another problem, as well. We may need a TV actor category, separate from the characters. Who doesn't want to see Bob Newhart up there? But he played 3 differing characters (and that can be argued for Lucy as well, but there's much less differentiation) - same for Ted Knight, although he wasn't the lead on MTM. Ditto for Lou Grant - started as a sitcom support character and became a dramatic lead in a very different type of series - played by the same guy.

James Garner, Andy Griffith and Michael Landon all might get the nod as actors, while no individual character might make the cut for the "character" Mount Rushmore of this thread.

Just food for thought.

It's not, and thusly says so in the OP. It can be longevity or iconic stature or whatever.
