Forgot to add; There Will be Blood. Don't care how good of an actor Lewis is, this movie just doesn't get me interested and I've tried watching it a couple times. Gangs of New York with an honorable mention. Doesn't do much for me either.

This is why I’m not a Daniel Day Lewis fan. I remember watching the last of the Mohicans as a kid and loving it. Watched There will be blood and was bored as hell. Same with gangs of New York.

Not sure I’ve seen any other of his movies but maybe I should watch a couple with all the hype he gets.

I just watched Napoleon with my kids for the first time since I saw in theaters and I liked it even more

So much subtle genius humor

The answer to this question is always big Lebowski

Nah, people that force-feed "cinema" to people and expect everyone to like it are the ones that are insane.

NCFOM was so memorable, whenever it comes up, ask anyone... they only remember ONE THING. And you know what that is, and it's not the plot.

I can say the same for the other two.
CTHD... running on treetops and shite, and uh....
Contact... I waited for 3 hours to learn it was her goddamn father?

Nah. I'll take fart jokes, explosions and boobies every day over good cinema. ;-)

I think a lot of folks on this board are using "this movie is overrated" and "I didn't get why I was supposed to like this" synonymously. Myself included.

For me, I didn't get what was so great about Chinatown, Apocalypse Now, No Country for Old Men. I watched them very excited to see what was surely going to be a cinematic masterpiece, and halfway through I'm already pausing it and taking a break. They weren't my cup of tea, I was bored, the characters made a lot of stupid choices, they just kind of ended without any real resolution, etc.

Others feel this way about movies I love; like The Big Lebowski, Forrest Gump, etc.

After reading this thread over the last few days, the them of overrated should probably fit more with the first one I brought up, The Dark Knight, which has a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and was the highest rated film by IMDB users for a long time. But it is a flawed movie and some of us who pointed it out 15 years ago were raked over the coals as trying to be edgy.

A better example is The Force Awakens. It is an objectively bad movie that has a 93% on rotten Tomatoes and an 84% user reviews. That movie is rated waay higher than it should be.

I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel here or redirect the thread, but I do think there is a difference between "overrated" and "I was supposed to like this."

Natural Born Killers and Pulp Fiction.

Both came out when I was in college and many friends raved about them. I couldn't understand the hype.

I get that everyone is different but just here on page 9 we have No country for old men, Chinatown, Apocalypse Now,and Lawrence of Arabia.....these are all great movies, classics even. It's hard to imagine a movie lover thinking these are not great movies.

The Godfather. Marlon Brando is like a cartoon character, Pacino crosses his leg and just sits there, somehow white James Caan is supposed to be super Italian, and Diane Keaton is the least fetching leading lady I've ever seen. The sound is terrible and the actual picture is so bad I can't tell if it's night day Christmas or July 4th

I mean in fairness to DDL, he did not write There Will Be Blood and Gangs of New York. I love both of those movies but if you think they were boring, that is on the writers, not DDl. It's crazy to think that as an actor he was great in both of those movies, regardless of how you feel about them as a whole.

No idea if you'd like the movies but he was pretty incredible in My Left Foot, The Boxer, and Lincoln to name a few.
