A script is floating around and one studio passes then hears another studio picks it up. So they quickly hire someoen to write something similar and tries to get it out before their competitor.
It also has to do with the fiction and historical zeitgeist of the time. It would happen a lot in comics as well. The writers and editors are all reading the same books and watching the same films and seeing the same news... and come up with similar ideas at the same time. So you end up with X-Men/Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing/Man Thing, Red Tornado/The Vision, etc.

Is that the one where they flew the helicopter into the chunnel?
Maybe. Are you sure you're not talking about the sex film "Missionary Impossible"?
(Did not search to confirm, but I made up that porn's movie name for the sake of the bad joke. Potentially wanted to make it a "your mom" type joke, but refrained.)

sometimes it's blatant copying too, i.e. Thanos being written in so that Marvel could have their own Darkseid

Hmm...I've never thought of "Mission Impossible" and "Eraser" being similar films.
I suppose there are some similarities, though.
But those disaster films are obvious cases of studios competing with on another.

Well, yeah, or parody/homages like the Shi'ar Imperial Guard or the Squadron Supreme that take on a life of their own and become a fixture.

White House down/ Olympus has fallen - as a more recent example

i still don't understand how that worked. did ethan just spam a bunch of emails and wait for max to contact him? i think they were able to get away with that in 96 because people still weren't clear on how the internet worked.

I just rewatched it recently and noticed that he is using Netscape Navigator.

This slideshow has awesome examples of how badly the IM film grasped the ins and outs of the internet.

i would assume watching it when it first came out, would make one appreciate it more.
For whatever reason, i didn't see it back then.
When Rogue Nation came out, i figured i should see the other 4 b/c both Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation looked great from the previews and i wanted to see them.
I thought the first one wasn't that good, but i did watch it for the first time just a few years ago.
I would think me not liking it would be like someone watching the Matrix today for the first time and not liking it that much, even though i think it's awesome b/c i saw it when it came out.
Can't wait for my kids to be with the grandparents next week so the wife and i can go see Fallout.

I watched all of them over the last 2 weeks. I imagine the first one was awesome when it first came out and holds a lot of nostalgia for people but I’d rank it 3rd out of the first 5. I do look how it was more espionage than action though
Rogue nation is head and shoulders above them all IMO (haven’t seen the new one).
Also, a cool Easter egg I noticed in ghost protocol: in the first one hunt is told to go to a bench and light up a dunhill cigarette so the contact knows it’s him. When he does this a Fabio looking guy comes and puts a bag over his head and takes him to the contact. In ghost protocol he is told to do this again and it’s the same Fabio looking guy from the first one that meets him, thought that was pretty cool
I also noticed that they make sure they always include a scene in which someone is tied off on a rope and free falls and is stopped by the rope at the last second before hitting the ground just like the iconic scene in the first one

That's certainly one reason why this movie has aged poorly.

Me, two minutes into movie: "Emilio!? Voight!? What a cast! This is gonna be great!"
Me, fifteen minutes into movie: "SON OF A..."

You know, this reminds me of how I was amazed at the idea of connecting to the internet from a moving train when I first saw MI.
In 96, I was astonished you might be able to get to the internet without a land line that required your mom not to pick up a phone during. Today, I'm posting this on my phone while I take a dump before returning to work for the afternoon.
What a time to be alive.

Me and my wife watched it a week ago. I agree with previous post. Did not age well at all. Was glad when it was over.

Similarities?
The hero is an agent is some secret govt agency. He has a mission that goes bad/he’s set up. They have to break into some super secure building where they have to get information from a super computer. The set up was by his mentor/boss from the same agency.
