I didn't see either; my understanding is that neither was a particularly good movie. That alone steered me away from the theaters to catch either.

I hold no opinion on why Lightyear bombed. It's possible everything played a part in it - some avoided it because of a message (perceived or otherwise), some avoided it because they held no interest in an origin story of a character who later was the basis for a toy, some avoided the theater altogether, and some probably from negative word of mouth. I doubt it was a "one issue" type of problem that derailed it though. For example, I doubt if they removed the kiss it suddenly becomes a top 5 2022 movie.

That being said, this thread was more about the surprise of a Minions movie breaking box office records than a critique of Lightyear.

It had all the hype. No one “wanted” a 5th minions movie either but it’s about to break a summer record. Minions is up against top gun with hardly dropped week over week and JW which didn’t have a big drop either. You’re a fricking retard. Those narratives have been destroyed.

Did this Minion movie have a ton of hype going in?

This is still true. But parents were way more comfortable with mindless fun and humor for their kids. And they’ve been craving it since they’ve had almost no options for years. This is proof more than anything.

Correct. I mean Lightyear is going to lose to Sing 2 for God’s sake. Those Sing movies take just a weekend to write and are lazy as all frick. It’s truly stunning how they’ve managed to frick it up to this degree.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I enjoyed the first Sing movie.
Haven't seen the second one though.

I just think it’s so fricking lazy. All it is is American Idol but with animals. Like with Zootopia and Bojack Horseman they get really creative with the animals in those worlds and it’s very important to the plot that they are animals, but here it wouldn’t change literally anything about the plot if they were humans instead.

Somebody will have to explain to me why high schoolers are dressing up in suits to see this movie.

Lightyear absolutely sucked. Honestly one of the worst animated movies I have ever seen. Politics aside that movie was horrific

Time travel for a kids movie? Are you kidding?

Minions was awesome

I don’t see that base concept being a bad idea at all for a kids movie. I can think of several kids shows and movies that have pulled it off.

I never saw you respond about your quote after seeing the lightyear trailer

quote:

Kids are gonna' eat this up.

Immediately after seeing the numbers you said kids and families didn’t want it.

Which is it?

That's fair; I just presumed the animals were there to make it cuter for little kids. Adults enjoy the music, kids get to see a koala talking to an elephant and a mouse.

The movie had two Buzz’s, because Buzz travel through time to a different dimension into a parallax universe…..

Yeh, a little heavy for a kids movie

This seems to be an odd complaint compared to the others.

I think kids have been exposed to it enough to grasp it pretty easily - my little brother wore out our old copy of Back to the Future and he was around 6 or 7, maybe younger?

Back to the future is a pretty simple concept. Whatever the frick happened in Buzz wasnt

Buzz is actually Zerg. It’s ridiculous

Minions broke records because millions of Gen Z boys wanted to get TikTok likes. Nothing more nothing less.

My kids love the Sing movies. I love the effect those two movies have had with my kids. It is Trojan horse to better music than the kids bop crap.
My 7 yo is hooked on U2 Spotify’ playlist as an example because of Sing 2.

I took my kids to the new Minions movie yesterday. It was mediocre.

Yeah it certainly isn’t the shite marketing and a film that never really established what it was or being a movie nobody asked for. But sure your dumb little narrative about dem gays is what caused it to bomb. Kids movies have had gay characters in it before and they didn’t bomb damn must be something else

I could make the argument that kids bop is better music than U2
