Minions expected to have a huge weekend at the box office. The film raked in $10.8 million in Thursday previews. Lightyear only made $5.2 million in Thursday previews.

Minions

The media narrative defending Lightyear was that families weren't ready to go back to theaters yet and that is why the film underperformed.

I am glad to know these same families got over their COVID fear in the last two weeks!

We all know the real reason Lightyear failed was because the word got out that it was a grooming movie that pushed a gay agenda on children.

Minions 4 day weekend might do more than Lightyears entire run, domestically

Yes, and so did Sonic 2 and other films. Those facts didnt deter the media from using COVID as the excuse for Lightyear's failure.

What bothers me is that Disney is so "all in" on promoting this gay stuff to children. I don't care what other adults do in private lives, just leave the kids alone.

I expect Disney to double down on this stuff. Which will create an enormous opportunity for other studios to gain MarketShare, if they have the balls to leave the woke bullshite out of their films.

That’s all the evidence we need. Plus parents don’t want to take their kids to an annoying Minions movie but should be dragging their kids to see Lightyear, and beloved character from their childhood.

Despicable Me shouldn’t have 5 movies, but apparently they can stay low budget and profitable and kids love them

To me, this makes it even more damning to Disney. That this film is not a great movie but it is still destroying Lightyear.

Parents just want to take their kids to a harmless, silly movie for 90 minutes and relax. As long as you don't try to indoctrinate their kids, the parents are pretty forgiving on quality. It is summer and Moms want to get the kids out of the house for awhile.

Disney has completely lost sight of their customer base. They now cater to the 20something nose ring crowd.

My 4 screen hometown theater kept Lightyear, a Disney/Pixar movie, for only two weeks.

It’s Minions, Jurassic Park, Elvis, and Top Gun on the current schedule.

You were all over the other thread saying that Buzz wasn’t a big IP. You’re an idiot.

While not quite the same, I recall some degree of outrage about Disney's "Turning Red". As such, I was a bit hesitant to let my 8 year old daughter watch it. She begged and pleaded for me to allow her to watch it. Knowing that her friends had already seen it and thinking I might be a bit unreasonable with my hesitancy I told her I'd watch it with her. Half way through she turned to be and said "this is boring. Do we have to keep watching?"

Point being, these studios are trying to push messages at the expense of making an entertaining movie. If your movie sucks, people don't really care to hear your agenda. They just want to see a good movie.

Lightyear may not make this much over the 4 day weekend. Yikes.

You seem to be working from the premise that quality correlates to box office success, which has never been the case in any era of movie-going. Horrible movies can do really well.

Minions are cheap, kids adore them, and the spinoffs still have the main characters from Despicable Me. None of those things are true for Lightyear. One thing that makes Lightyear so weird is that the appeal of it, if it exists at all, is for adults who grew up with Toy Story. That franchise is not the massive hit with currently small children that it used to be. Those children grew up and post dumb crap on message boards now.

My 8 year old loves the toy story movies. Toy story has sold more merchandise than any other animated franchise including Frozen and Cars. Toy Story 3 sold $2.4 bil the year it was released, a record in 2010… 15 years after the original. Disney’s most popular single toy of all time is the buzz Lightyear figurine. Buzz had his own ride in Disney world before toy story land was ever a thought. The people who actually buy the tickets for the theater and drive their kids are the ones who grew up and love the TS characters. Your assumption that Buzz and Toy story don’t have enough appeal is fricking garbage.

I liked the original Toy Story, but my interest decreased a bit with each successive movie. I've yet to see 4, much less Lightyear. Maybe one day.

Melting is just whining about something and doing nothing about it. Seems like people aren’t just “melting” over Lightyear. No one is seeing it.
