There has never been a good biopic, this is no surprise

Even the good ones (Amadeus is the only good one) are pretty exaggerated.

Hollywood is running out of ideas. It is either a reboot that no one wants. A sequel from 20, 30, or 40 years ago (maverick the exception). A comic book superhero movie that is not true to the character of fan base or the audience.
Now the latest thing the last few years is biopics on musicians. Rumor has it that Madonna is pitching an idea for a biopic about her life.

The sad thing is the original movie ideas that are made have no marketing behind it.

I read somewhere the third act about the allegations had to be scrapped because of legal agreements with victims’ families that they could never be depicted in film.

Seriously.

It’s insane to me that Hollywood thinks anyone gives a flying frick about Bruce Springsteen or Neil Diamond’s backstories

it’s why I don’t have a problem with a movie like sinners having all those Oscar nominations. Do I think it’s deserves all those nominations? Absolutely not. but maybe directors and studios see its success and see that audiences crave original ideas.

Good point. I saw that The Drama is over 100 mil WW so far. It's great seeing these original films doing well

I think the only one I actually enjoyed is Bohemian Rhapsody... and they definitely didn't shy away from the depression and dark turns that Freddie Mercury endured.

Or Neil Diamond impersonators, if talking about a movie that actually exists.

RT doesn’t mean anything …. Here are 5 movies they shite on which went on to be wildly successful

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

* Rotten Tomatoes (critics): ~20%
* Box office: ~$836 million
* Why it still won: Big action, visual effects, and franchise hype carried it despite harsh reviews.

==========

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

* Rotten Tomatoes: ~53% (not terrible, but surprisingly low for its success)
* Box office: ~$1.06 billion
* Why: Fans loved Jack Sparrow and the adventure, even if critics thought it was bloated.

==========

The Lion King

* Rotten Tomatoes: ~52%
* Box office: ~$1.6 billion
* Why: Nostalgia and Disney’s brand power drove huge ticket sales.

==========

Suicide Squad

* Rotten Tomatoes: ~26%
* Box office: ~$746 million
* Why: Strong marketing and interest in characters like Harley Quinn pulled audiences in.

==========

Venom

* Rotten Tomatoes: ~30%
* Box office: ~$856 million
* Why: Fans of Venom showed up

And financial success doesn't mean high quality, as all listed except Dead Man's Chest are absolutely dreadful.

Wakanda Forever made more money than any one of the Guardians movies

Box office success can happen for any number of reasons, quality is not always one of them

This should be an easy win for Lionsgate. Michael is still huge. This would be huge frick up if it disappoints at the box office

I’d pay to see a real Doc and show raw footage like this for 2 hours. Surely there’s enough behind the scenes video out there. And throw in his music obviously.

Michael Jackson’s nephew Taj Jackson slams the media ahead of the “Michael” biopic release.

“Sorry, media, you don’t get to control the narrative anymore of who Michael Jackson truly was. The public gets to watch this movie… they will decide for themselves. And you can’t handle that. Can’t wait until some critics have to eat crow. And yes, I will be that petty," he wrote on X.

True loser nonsense. No family has tighter control of a deceased celebrity's public narrative than the Jackson's do of Michael's. They successfully sued HBO into all but erasing Leaving Neverland from existence.

The movie you threatened legal action to drastically alter (likely for the worse) is going to make a great deal of money. Don't be such a shite.

I like the window approach - focus on a week or a month or a year instead of a comprehensive history/arc. Draw in history in snippets for context.

Estates often take issue with this, preferring a full story, but I think the movie almost always suffers for it.

I'm drawing a blank on a good comparable, but Darkest Hour or Air come to mind (obviously the latter is more about Nike than Jordan).

To anyone who has watched it already.

How is it from your perspective? I am going tomorrow night with my wife and few friends.

I'm seeing it on Sunday. I'll be interested to hear the boards opinion on this one.

Should I update this to a discussion thread?
