I think the only music biopics I've ever enjoyed were Coal Miner's Daughter, and Ray.

The Robbie Williams one "Better Man" looks like it could be decent, but I haven't seen it. And the recent Bob Dylan one garnered positive reception, so I will have to check that one out.

Not gonna lie, Walk Hard nearly completely ruined most music biopics for me.

Article, removing child abuse allegations from movie

quote:

Michael,” which Lionsgate will release in the United States on April 24, was supposed to explore the impact of the allegations on Jackson’s life, with much of its third act devoted to the scandal. But that finale was scrapped, along with any mention of the child molestation accusations, according to sources with knowledge of the production.

You also can't adequately tell the story of his life in essentially 2 hours. Unlike people like Ray Charles, Elton John, Freddie Mercury, Bob Dylan, even Elvis, etc, Jackson was a star at 12 years old and was immensely more popular worldwide than maybe anyone on that list. Given that, plus his personal life, there is a LOT of story to tell there. So I'm sure the studio just decided to stick to (mostly) the good in order to sell tickets rather than get into everything that surrounded Jackson's life.

(which begs the question "why make the movie at all?")

Because Hollywood has very few good ideas anymore, bio-pics make money, and Jackson was the most famous celebrity in the world for the better part of a decade. It's low hanging fruit to make money....even if the movie sucks.

Does it talk about him raping young boys?

Lionsgate used to be much more selective about the projects they picked up. Now they just select anything that they know will generate box office margins

When? The studio of Saw, Twilight, Hunger Games, Divergent, Now You See Me, and John Wick. All relatively inexpensive, or IP acquired inexpensively, and designed to be profitable.

MJ was an amazing talent.

But, I might rather see a "Michael" movie about Michael Myers".

right there's probably a fascinating story to tell when it comes to his life if you do it honestly

this is just a cash grab by the estate releasing a highlight reel and hopefully increasing music sales and merch purchases

They’re just mad child rape wasn’t depicted on screen.

Music bio pics are generally insufferable. We've had an avalanche of terrible ones the past few years too for some reason.

It really did do a great job of mocking how formulaic they all are.

I loved Rocketman and Elvis. The Bob Marley and Bob Dylan ones were ok as well. Didn’t care for the Queen one and haven’t seen the Springsteen one

Do you mean musical biopic? Surely you can’t mean no good biopic ever.

One of the shittiest editing jobs ive ever seen and hilarious revisionist history from the living Queen members.

At one point they tell Freddie "we're going home to our families" while hes out partying lmao. yeah right

I rewatched La Bamba a few weeks ago and still love that one. No idea how “faithful” it is to Valens’ life but it’s a great flick with awesome music.
