Caine was Ebert’s favorite actor. He was fond of pointing out that although Cain had been in some bad movies, he bad never given a bad performance.

This is sad. I was really looking forward to seeing him in Nolan's next movie.

One of my favorites of Caine’s, and Connery’s as well.

Well deserved retirement. Love the impressions Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon do on The Trip movies.

Hate to hear that he's having spine issues, but hope he can enjoy his retirement for a long while. One of the greatest, no doubt.

He's one of the last of the old school British actors. No matter how good, or bad, a script is if the money is right by golly he'll take the role.

I don't say that as an insult. Rather as a compliment. He is a working actor, and the emphasis is on working. No part is too small, no paycheck too big.

He has made an amazing array of movies, and deserved far more awards than he got during his career. I think, to be honest, that everyone sort of took it for granted that of course Caine was going to be amazing. Because of course he would.

Sir Michael Caine confirms that he will still star in Christopher Nolan's movies, despite announcing his retirement: "I'll be in Chris's films. The 'retirement' is apart from Chris Nolan. Because it's only a short 3 or 4 minutes, that's all I do and it's great."

That scene is better CGI than a lot of the shite we see today. It's so weird.

I love the story he tells about walking down a street in Hollywood with Cary Grant one day in the 1960s. They were passing a hotel and a lady came out of the lobby and recognized Caine and went apeshit. She told him she’d been in Hollywood for 2 weeks, that he was the first movie star she’d seen and asked him for his autograph. While he was obliging her, she turned to Cary Grant and said something to him along the lines of how you never see movie stars just out and about. All Grant could do was smirk and agree with her.

What Ebert was getting at was that there's just this likeability about him. Even when he played a villain, you're rooting for him.

I doubt many people saw him come on a screen in a movie and say, "oh shite, it's Michael Caine."

He dwarfs Steve Martin and Sean Connery in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and the Man Who Would Be King respectively.

And he binds one of the best films of the last 20 years in a minor role in The Prestige.
