Easily one of the GOAT "ship and sails" type of movie. It's so fricking good.

It gets brought up a good bit on here, and I think someone posted an article one of the last times it was talked about. It was about the set pieces in some country (South America maybe?). It was either about this movie, or a similarly-themed one, but I thought it was M&C.

Either way, great, great movie.

I've read the entire series multiple times. If you're interested in the Napoleonic era, the British Navy, good historical fiction etc then it's a definite recommend.

I would love a BBC series based on the books.

There is a decent BBC series of movies based on the Hornblower books. Very similar to M&C.

Yeah, I read the first M&C book and the lack of explanation of the nautical terms put me off a bit. Still a good read, but I had to gloss over the passages with the deep cuts.

If you are considering buying the Box Set of Books, then seriously consider these two books to accompany the series.

A Sea of Words (accompanying lexicon)

Harbors and High Seas (Maps of Series)

These two books really helped to make sense of all the nautical terms.

100% agree. And I'll add - be prepared to read a chapter or two of the first couple of books and then look back at the lexicon for some help understanding the terms.

My first attempt at the first book was slow. It took a while to understand the terms and the learn the characters. I found that my understanding really kicked in by the 3 book (HMS Surprise) and the pace of the stories picked up as well.

Landlubbers will struggle with the series until they get some sea legs.

Nonsense. It's a period piece, not an action flick. It's perfectly paced.

I googled so much during the first couple of books. By book five I could tell you just about any part of a British Frigate

The movie takes large pieces from Master and Commander, the first book in the series, and The Far Side of the World, which is book ten. I am currently reading book sixteen, The Wine-Dark Sea

I tried to read the M&C series but it is a tough read

I looked it up. You just taught me landlubbers was a word.

I always thought the term was "land lover." Lubber is an "oaf or dumb person." So a dummy from land.

Movie is awesome

My goodness, you're a sensitive soul. Landlubber is defined as "a person unfamiliar with the sea or sailing." That's exactly how you described yourself. I just used the correct nautical term. You're welcome.

I have to re-watch this. I saw it when it was new and thought "meh".....I had to have missed something because this board seems to love the shite out of this movie.

Not sure what the nautical term is for sarcasm.

It is that rare movie that knows exactly what it is and doesn't try to be anything but what it wants to be. It is, in that regard, perfect.

Take a generic MCU movie and they want it to be a comedy, drama, action adventure, possibly with some political aspects thrown in. More often than not they don't quite hit all of the marks and the movie is uneven. Master and Commander knows what they are going for and concentrates on that.
