The movie takes large pieces from Master and Commander, the first book in the series, and The Far Side of the World, which is book ten. I am currently reading book sixteen, The Wine-Dark Sea.

Yep, it’s a good book series. I’ve read the first three.

Usually I tend to dislike franchises but this is one I wish would've happened.

But it made $211.6 million at the BO, against a budget of $150 million. $60 mil is a death knell profit for Hollywood.

Apparently there is a prequel in the works.

I thought this could be a Bond-like series, like Ian Fleming. I mean there's 20 books of source material already out there.

That box office take is about the best they could have hoped for. 1) It is an uncompromising movie in that it stays true to the style and dialogue of the books, which doesn’t lend itself to mainstream appeal. 2) It came out in a year that had already seen a nautical, 1700s themed blockbuster with the first Pirates. 3) It came out in a busy month with The Matrix Revolutions, The Return of the King, and a few other highly anticipated blockbusters also releasing around the same time.

So $212 million was a good take. Maybe with just a bit better marketing it could have made $250 million.

What it really needed to cut down on to make it profitable would be the budget. It really needed to be closer to 80-100 million. But then you probably sacrifice the big name stars and the budget for the ship and special effects.

It’s an amazing series. The movie does the books justice and they should have made more of them.

Saw it for the first time in the past year. All I could think of when it was over was "why the frick haven't I seen this masterpiece before now?" I randomly picked it out one night, and I'm glad I did.

The end scene where they pan waaaay out and the ship is turning toward the other on the far horizon combined with that music is an all timer for me.

If you are considering buying the Box Set of Books, then seriously consider these two books to accompany the series.

A Sea of Words (accompanying lexicon)

Harbors and High Seas (Maps of Series)

These two books really helped to make sense of all the nautical terms.
