Marvel Studios’ Black Widow stand-alone movie has its director.

Cate Shortland, the Australian filmmaker perhaps best known for the Nazi drama Lore, has signed on to helm Black Widow, Marvel’s action-adventure project that will star Scarlett Johansson.

I don’t see this movie working out.

Black Widow isn’t going to be able to carry a movie in the MEU. She needs a darker setting.

this is a big ol meh for me. She is the worst character in the MCU to me and does nothing to move the excitement meter.

I'm thinking a team up with Hawkeye.

SJ can't carry a movie by herself. I hate to say it, but she isn't a draw...which is why the movie will have lots and lots of iron man and/or captain america

I both agree and disagree with you. I agree SJ and Black Widow can't carry a traditional Marvel film. However this character could carry a darker, character-based Marvel vehicle such as the Netflix style shows, a la Jessica Jones. Can Marvel pull this off on the big screen, not sure?

Her paired with Winter Soldier would be the way to go. They were together for a time in the comics. Have them uncover past secrets, go back to Russia, the whole globe trotting thing would work

Will probably be like a rap album.

Will be promoted as a standalone thing, but has 30 other rappers make guest appearances.

Unless they make this basically a Bourne type movie that is only loosely tied to the MCU, I don't see the story being very interesting. Black Widow is a side character for a reason in the other movies.

Maybe we'd get to find out what happened in Budapest.

I'd watch a movie about Black Widow and Hawkeye raiding a Hydra base. It would be smaller scale than the typical save the world Marvel movie. Might be a nice change of pace. Throw in a Captain America cameo and it could be good.

I don’t think an origin story would work very well.

But yeah, a prequel type movie with Winter Soldier and Hawkeye could be good. I don’t think it would be a huge box office hit. But may be like Ant Man or Incredible Hulk level. But will get big praise and accolades for girl power.

There's a reason in 7 years they haven't done a Black Widow film. Because no one wants one. Look at Ghost in the Shell live action film with SJ. I thought it was great visually, but very shallow otherwise also it didn't even make a profit, even with SJ starring.

They may be setting her up to take the place of the Cap movies (ie: Bourne-type political intrigue and action) once Evans' contractual obligations for playing Cap are done. If so, she's going to need some secondary character (Cap had Falcon, Punisher had Micro, Iron Man had Pepper, etc). I'll go with the consensus here and say either Hawkeye or Winter Soldier would fit that role well.

Regardless of whom they place beside her it's going to need to be a solid story to draw an audience, not just a showcase of a hero and their abilities.

Solid play, but the story will have to be on point.

The Name of the Rose or Homecoming would be solid starting points.

And while Hawkeye makes the most sense, I see WS as the best play to bring in if he doesn't get the Shield (or even if he does, this would be a nice soft intro to that level of the character).

Additionally, and less likely, Widow has tangled with the Punisher before. If there's any Netflix character I could see on the big screen, it's Bernthal.
