This was done in the latest edition of Sight and Sound Magazine.

That whole thing is a director fart-sniffing list.

One thing is for sure - he did not try to please anybody
I'd also agree on most of those. Maybe the wrong Dreyer.
Surprised he doesn't have Sunrise, I thought he was a fan of that one.
Maybe the wrong Renoir and Kubrick too, but I understand it.
The Leopard, Ikiru, Kane, Vertigo, Ugetsu all great choices. 8 1/2 is too on point, but again I get it. And he's always loved Felllini.

I’ve never seen any of those movies. 13 of the 16 I’ve never heard of.

I, too, enjoyed my share of Red Shoe cinema when I was younger.

What? No Marvel movies?

Of the list, I saw four, liked three, one was tedious. The rest, meh.

I’ve never seen this movie, but for the snooty cinephiles in here, what makes 8 1/2 such a mainstay on these sorts of lists?

No Pootie Tang, no care
Spiceworld another glaring omission

I’ve seen five of these: 2001, 8.5, Citizen Kane, The Searchers, and Vertigo, and they are all classics. I definitely want to check out the rest. If you saw the recent movie “Living” with Bill Nighy, it was based on the same Tolstoy short story as Ikiru and basically has the same plot. I had never heard of “The Leopard” but I just googled it and it looks really good. It stars Burt Lancaster.

Where’s Caddy Shack 2?

I’ve seen 4 of those, haven’t heard of several. List reeks of fart sniffing. Vertigo and The Searchers are great films. I’ve never been a fan of 2001 and Kane is good but I’ll never watch it again.

You know, I really enjoyed Ordet, but the sequels really sucked after they made it into a franchise:
Ordet In Breaking Training
Ordet Down Under
Ordet The Ordet Strikes Back
Ordet Don't Count Us Out
Ordet Summer Beach House
Ordet We're Not Finished Yet
...sigh

I feel you. I think 2001, Citizen Kane and The Searchers are all safe picks that I also agree with. Probably true of Vertigo as well (although not my favorite film by Hitch, probably his best "film" whatever that entails).
No Tarantino? No Francis? None of his contemporary/direct competitors out of Hollywood or British cinema (except Stanley, of course)? That's pretty salty.

That's always the problem with these lists. They're afraid to open the "contemporary" can of worms so they just list a bunch of old foreign films. That way nobody gets ruffled feathers and most people haven't seen them so they just shrug and say "I guess so, he's an expert".
I also think movies are too diverse to lump into one category. It's like saying who was better - Thomas Jefferson or Michael Jordan? Better at what? How about Beethoven versus the Beatles? On some level you have to compartmentalize movies and other forms of entertainment for what they are and what they intend. Westerns, Sci-Fi, Disney, Comedy, Action, Horror, Romance, Thriller... Then you can make your list. Granted there's still some overlap but at least you aren't comparing the Exorcist to Caddyshack.
