The John Wick films are cartoons or video games masquerading as live-action movies. They are well-done. They are pretty to look at. But they have zero SOUL. Everything is stylized. Nothing seems remotely REAL.
In this round, compare Lethal Weapon. It also has good acting, humor, human relationships and ... gasp ... a plot. But it DOES have less hand-to-hand combat and gunfire. I just don't think that you measure the "Best Action Film" by counting the number of rounds fired or punches thrown.

I haven't spoke highly of it in these treads but it's not hate, it's more of just surprise. Clearly overall the board loves it (more than most since it's imdb score is only 7.4). It's a two seed and just beat an epic action film in First Blood. It has already had three movies and has two more coming, so I guess I shouldn't be shocked. I don't really know what year it starts to count as modern but I don't think it's even in the same ballpark as The Matrix.
