Oh yeah, then totally. Completely pointless characters.

But the show was still "about" purgatory in a round about way

If you're saying the island served as a vehicle to redemption just as purgatory does, I can see the connection.

Opposite. They tried to explain way too much with the island. The island was cool because it was mysterious.

what happens if you die in the alternate... ala Keamy...

The other people in the alternate reality were not "there" except for maybe Farraday and Eloise.

The purgatory was "only for" the Losties and their relations because they were important to each other.

It wasn't a purgatory for everyone else who died in the world.

It was an "exclusive" purgatory. "They" made it.

I know there are a lot of nits to pick, but was it really fricking necessary for Desmond to hit Locke with the car in purgatory?

My take: What happened on the island was real. The island was the gate to the afterlife, ie eternal life. If it was destroyed ALL life would cease.

The light had to be put out to kill smokie, then quickly reignited to preserve the afterlife. Once that was accomplished everyone else alive lived their life off island.

What we are seeing in the "alt" timeline is a flash forward to when all the characters have died and are living in the afterlife. They are then able to move on to the "light" that Jack had preserved.

Thats what I thought to, but the mom talking to Desmond at the concert is a little bit of a kink in that explanation.

This was the give away that they were dead in the "alt" time line. Recall how all through season six they were saying that if the Monster leaves, ie the island is sunk, everyone dies. By showing the island under water, there is no more "spark" of life.

I'll take it.

IMO people are reading into the plane at the end too much. I think it was just a tribute to the show and where it all started.

LOST "The End" S6.E17&18
So i guess the basic summary of the episode is as follows:

There was no split timeline. Jack died on the island. Kate, Sawyer, Lupidus, Miles all flew the jet off the island and lived their lives after they got back to civilization. Hurley served as protector of the island, and Ben served as his aide. When they all died at their various times, they then went to "purgatory" which we know as sideways world. When they were "ready" in "purgatory" they realized what had happened and were ready to move on. So they all did. No telling how long that took. Remember, "There is no now here, Jack" per Christian.

Christian says the time Jack spent with them was the "most important time of his life."

Kate says "I've missed you" because she presumably lived without Jack for a time after leaving the island.

Hurley tells Ben he was a great number 2 because they actually served on the island in the real world for a time.

Ben tells Locke he doesn't need the wheelchair. He didn't need the wheelchair (or PT to learn to walk) because it wasn't real.

Ben tells Hurley he's not ready yet because he's got "more stuff to work out" before he can move on. This is a traditional purgatory motif. Similarly, Ana Lucia and Daniel Farraday are not ready to move on.

Farraday's mom asks Desmond if he is taking Daniel along. His response: I'm not taking him.

Conclusion: The island was real; sidewaysville was "purgatory".

This guy gets it. I don't see why it's confusing.

Further, I think "purgatory" was possibly their original idea and the movie "The Passengers" ended that so they went a different direction and left that last image of the plane as a nugget for those who like to over think things.

Sure hope he spent some good long time there.

And I agree that pairing him with Shannon was weak. He loved Nadia his whole life and Shannon for two weeks.

He needed to go to jail to bust out kate and sayid, and he needed jack to see locke again.
