I'll always associate him with Star Chamber and The Firm.

I remember him best from The Crate in Creepshow. Well, I probably remember it better because his nagging wife was played by Adrienne Barbeau and her awesome tits.

Same. Always loved this exchange in Creepshow:

quote:

Wilma Northrup: (after Henry slams her against the crate several times) That was great, Henry. That was just great. You think this is a Friday night fight? Is that what you think? You want to see some real punching? Same old Henry. Afraid of your own shadow. You know what, Henry? You're a regular barnyard exhibit. Sheep's eyes, chicken guts, piggy friends, and shite for brains. No good at departmental politics...no good at making money...no good at making an impression on anybody! And no good at all in bed! When was the last time you got it up, Henry? When was the last time you were a man in our bed? Now, get out of my way, or I swear you'll be wearing your balls for earrings! I swear to God if you ever touch (the monster pops out of the crate and eats her.)

quote:

Henry Northrup: ...Just tell it to call you Billie.

Was great as Commander Joseph Rochefort in Midway (1976). Top man amongst the code breakers. He was always great as an eccentric Southerner.

Caption: Captain Garth : You know, it really stinks down here. How often do some of your people take a bath?

Commander Rochefort : Bath? Hell, I don't know. What *day* is it?

Yea he was and I didn’t even know that was him.

I’ll always know him as father malone. Damn, just realized he and Adrienne Barbeau were in two movies together.

In the 1973 TV movie Pueblo he played Lloyd Bucher, commander of the US Navy ship that was taken by N Korea. Its crew held for over a year.

Dang for some reason that never registered even though I’m big fan of Into the Wild and The Firm

Also impressed he lived 14 years after Into the Wild.

Some, well before their time.

Hal Holbrook was just days away from his 95th birthday.

Damn Chinese 58 I was going to post that exact exchange from midway. I watch that movie all the time and that is my favorite line. Second favorite is when Nimitz says “trouble is, I want that fourth carriier”! Great film.

His last scene from Into the Wild has always stuck with me. When he asked Emile Hirsch if he could adopt him and had tears form in his eyes... that hit hard. Something about old people crying just destroys me.

Apparently it was personal for him:
quote:

Reading the script, Holbrook connected to the story of McCandless’ ultimately tragic wanderlust. ”My son did something similar,” he says, dredging up a memory that’s clearly still painful after 30 years. ”He was on the road for two years, living outdoors, looking for something. Even when he came to L.A., he lived outside in a sleeping bag — and I don’t mean on the lawn, I mean alongside the highway. I was busy, doing jobs and traveling, and couldn’t really spend the time with him I should have. You have to spend a lot of years repairing something like that, and we have.”

The whole interview from 2008 is very good: Entertainment Weekly

Amazing guy:

quote:

From its earliest days, Holbrook’s working life has been fueled by urgency. A Depression-era kid, abandoned by his parents at age 2 and raised by his grandfather, he was driven by the simple need to survive. In 1956, still getting his bearings as a young stage actor, Holbrook found himself propelled to stardom when he appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show performing a selection from the Twain act he’d developed, for which he’d eventually win a Tony award.
