They were both exercises in vanity for their respective filmmakers. The Hobbit and Desolation of Smaug at least nailed the most important scenes in the conversations between Bilbo/Gollum and Bilbo/Smaug. The first two Star Wars prequels had only one thing that came close to that quality and that was the lightsaber fight between Darth Maul and Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon. I won't defend the complete special effect nightmare that was Battle of the Five Armies.

I'll say this. I was more immersed and blown away by LOTR than Star Wars when I first saw each movie.

However, Star Wars has MUCH more rewatchability to it and it's not even close.

If you use Episodes 1, 2, and 3 as reasons to bash Star Wars then the Hobbit movies should be used against LOTR

Didn't the Lord of the Rings have a scene with a walking tree that put a fire on its branches out in a creek?

Yeah, it loses points for that.

LOTR is the better movie series of the two, but Star Wars culture and overall contribution to film makes it more important / better on a different scale.

Star Wars also has one of the greatest twists in cinematic history so that alone puts it up there in terms of greatness. If the original script of ROTJ was fully realized or if Lucas just substituted Wookies for Ewoks it could've been the GOAT trilogy.

No. It had a badass, arse-kicking, shepherd of the forest that doused his flaming head in a raging flood and continued with the arse-kickery.

Lord of the Rings is fairly widely regarded as the greatest trilogy ever made. I have to agree with that assessment. Though I love both.

I'll go out on a limb and guess that you are too young to have seen Star Wars in the theaters in 1977 in first release. I was 8 then, and it was an incredible experience.
Remember, we had nothing near it at the time.

LoTR was exciting because of the anticipation of finally seeing it in live-action (and the books are great), while Star Wars was just a stunner out of the blue.

stunna*

Anyways, it's a landslide. Better movie, production, story-line, casting, hunks, book, director and author.

People just like Star Wars because of nostalgia.

Well damn, it should be better. It was following one of the best fantasy novels ever written. JR Tolkien or a guy obsesses with selling mattel toys

Maybe not, but I was always expecting Frodo and Sam to start fricking at any time.

Show some ignorance here bro, I will take the hook. Tolkien served in WW I, matter of fact all his friends he joined with died in the War. The relationship between Sam and Frodo is that of soldiers living through hell together. Anyone who really understands the sacrifice of soldiers for each other would understand the relationship between the two.

Even more specifically, it was patterned off of the relationship between an officer and his batman, which was a soldier assigned to an officer as his personal assistant. That was supposed to be a very loyal relationship.

Here is the Wikipedia page on Batman.

LINK

It even mentions Lord of the Rings:

quote:

J. R. R. Tolkien took the relationship of his characters Samwise Gamgee and Frodo Baggins from his observations while in military service during World War I of the relationship between a batman and his officer.

I actually like the Hobbit more than most, but you should either compare LOTR+Hobbit vs Episodes 1-6 or just LOTR vs Episodes 1-3.

I personally don't have an opinion. I don't think I could pick one over the other

I completely agree. LotR was just so much more awesome. Fantasy at its finest. It really captured me as a kid watching Fellowship in theaters and seeing that horse chase
