I heard Amazon built a massive stuido in NZ, but because of the Wuhan flu, production got locked down and they had to move to the UK.
If *WETA are doing it, I'm sure it's under a tight budget and on short notice.
This crap isn't even apprentice level stuff which was done for the LOTR trilogy. That was straight up old world craftmanship there. This is a fracking T-shirt under plastic chainmail.
* I was joking about this being Weta work. It's so far beneath their own standards.

I'm glad we are back around to production quality, and off the race and finger pointing
I'm not that worried about the plate mail thing. Yeah, this is beneath Weta's standards... for a film. For a TV series, it might be best not to look at everything too closely.
Regarding that OTHER line of thought: I don't think anyone is racist or otherwise hostile. There's just a genuine concern that a property (Tolkien's Middle Earth) be treated with respect, and presented on-screen in a manner consistent with the original concept. That's fine, I feel that way too.
I think Conan might be the better candidate to explore diversity, and not this. Tolkien, by nature of his focus on certain aspects, created an emphasis on ethnicity. Sure, it's fantasy, but it still needs to be correct within it's own world. The primary method of displaying what a character is, is by their appearance. You SHOULD be able to look at someone and say "Elf/Man/Dwarf", because he described features (and it's not just pointy ears. I don't believe the ears even really matter). And Tolkien meant no harm either, he simply didn't have the context written into his tales to include people outside European appearance.
If it is to be done, it must be done tastefully, and within the context of the tale. There is no 'modern' racism in Tolkien's work... there are elements of fantasy racism. Elves will generally look down on Dwarves, and Dwarves will similarly have disdain for the Elves. Color won't matter a bit, a Black Elf will still consider all Dwarves uncouth and rough, no matter what color they are.

Elves could be D’s to just about everyone else. They saw themselves as superior for being the firstborn, because basically they were. They were low level elitists, but not all of them & not all the time. They’d basically troll the other races like a big brother would do to a younger sibling. It’s just who they were. But they also knew damn well that these lesser beings were vital allies against the real threats, like Morgoth or Sauron.

One thing to keep in mind is the Numenoreans ruled their island kingdom for thousands of years unchecked and unchallenged by anyone. Numenor was based off of Plato’s Atlantis, so the Greco-Roman style look may be more fitting as opposed to the medieval middle earth warriors who were in constant battle.
As soon as Elendil and sons arrived in Middle Earth, they were at war with Sauron’s forces. Places like Minis Tirith and Minus Morgul we’re constructed as fortresses and citadels to repel attacks, as opposed to the cities in Numenor that were much different.
I’m not trying to excuse the piss-poor Amazon design team, but rather trying to be a little more optimistic about the new settings we’ll be introduced to.
Nothing will beat Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth wartime looks.

Just watched the trailer and can’t really see why this thread is 19 pages. Until I saw OML pop up
I enjoyed the trailer. Will probably be solid but this board will never allow for logical discussion of it in the In-Game threads

I’m not going to tolerate being slandered as a racist when an actual racist is projecting his racism onto me.

I’ll disprove that right now. So in the trailer a character says the following:
quote:
The past is dead. We either move forward, or we die with it.
Now we know which character said that. Any guesses? It’s none other than fricking Elendil…. Are you shitting me? Elendil is completely defined by preserving the past as the leader of the Faithful. It was because of him not letting the past die that thousands of Numenorians survived. And that was a quote straight out of the Last Jedi. That is as insulting to Elendil as this was to Jaime Lannister when he said he didn’t care for the commoners when he sacrificed everything in his life for them:

No, if you bring logic into this, you’re called a racist by retard self loathing white supremacist cunts like SammyTiger. Logical discussion means you’re a racist in this thread. Read through that cocksucker’s posts that are nothing but slanderous.

There are several times Elendil may need to tell Isildur to get back on his feet, that "the past is dead, and we will be too if we don't move on";
first could be Ar-Pharazon coming to power. This puts Elendil and his family at odds with the King, something unfathomable for them beforehand.
Second and more likely, could be after the destruction of Numenor, when their entire country has just been destroyed literally by the hand of God. Isildur could be ready to lay down and die on the beach, saying all is lost. Elendil has to push him to keep moving.
We know they founded Arnor and Gondor afterwards. That is moving forward.

Oh you don’t? You think it’s just a coincidence that the show is releasing on the date of Tolkien’s death and that line is cherry-picked by the Amazon team to include in the trailer? I’m so sure

No Tolkien fan would possibly say this.

Oh frick off man. It’s one TV show, and at its worst will hardly make a dent in the Tolkien legendarium.

So….. Should I be as mad or madder about this over how mad I was with the Hobbit trilogy?

"the past is dead" wouldn't pass for Tolkien speech. At least he'd have distinguished between the fate of those who strayed and the Faithful, who would escape the wrath of the Valar.
Same goes for the silly 'I've seen things you have not seen ' back and forth between Galadriel and Elrond. It's low rent fanfic dialogue like that which only cheapens this treatment of Tolkien.

Without respect, we reject.
This isn't remotely coming close to respecting Tolkien.

I’m convinced that some of you don’t realize this is all make believe…

This may be the only chance in our lifetime where we get to see parts of The Silmarillion brought to life. Worst case, we can just forget about it and move on as if it doesn’t exist, but regardless, Tolkien’s literature will live on forever.

It’s no different than the Mona Lisa or Michelangelos David. It’s a work of art, and I’m convinced you wouldn’t mind if Amazon took a sharpie and just made a few adjustments, to update these old versions to the modern era.

With how reboot happy Hollywood is, I’m not so sure.
