I'm sure Idris Elba as King Triton will soon follow.

I had the unfortunate experience of stopping at a Circle K near Hammond late last night to get fuel on drive home. I witnessed a Nubian Queen pushing 3 bills with orange hair.

So, I suppose that a black Ariel is not that too far fetched.

I don’t get why so many people care that a Disney movie has a black girl as the lead

False equivalence.

Jasmine and Mulan are characters specific to a culture. Changing their ethnicity would change who they are. If Disney wanted to make Merida, who is Scottish, a black girl, then your "concern" would be valid.

Ariel is a MERMAID, and Disney presented ONE interpretation of mermaid. This is another. The central focus for Ariel in the Disney version isn't on her white skin or red hair. It is her VOICE. THAT is the character trait that drives the action. As long as Ariel can SING, the casting shouldn't really matter.

Boy, are people gonna melt once they cast Ursula, who was literally modelled on Divine (who didn't get the part because of her massive drug habit).

It’s looking like it’s going to be Melissa McCarthy.

She's fine, but I'd love Lizzo or a fantastic drag performer.

The Ariel casting doesnt really bother me, bc like was just stated, her voice is more defining of the character than race.

But this is horrendous. I can just see her in a commercial or trailer and get mad about how unfunny she is. I can easily imagine a black Ariel than I can a McCarthy Ursula. Ugh.

I agree with you.

Surprised it’s not Leslie Jones though. Don’t want either.

Oh I am. I said earlier in the thread that it should have been given to Nathan Lane, who would just kill the role.

So who will they cast to play Merida? I’m thinking Kevin Hart.

You aren't paying attention. Merida's character and story is bound to her culture. She's Scottish. That cannot be changed.

Ariel is a mermaid, a mythical creature. Her VOICE is what drives her character and story.

Funny that people are up in arms over casting a woman instead of a drag queen, but don't give a shite about Pat Carroll, who carried the original movie with her performance.

I agree...and if they decide to remake "Song of the South" I think Uncle Remus should be white or asian since he is just another fictional character

Well true, but unfortunately that is no longer a realistic option.
