They are absolutely trying to expand the audience while still capitalizing on the nostalgia of “older” viewers. Which isn’t going to work as well with a completely different looking character. Parents of kids have been buying the old Disney movies for years. The Little Mermaid came out 30 years ago but she’s just as recognizable now to 5 year olds.

Again, from a movie perspective and personally, this doesn’t affect me and idc. But I can see the problem/confusion for the young audience who won’t make that connection. Or in the case of kids who see this as THE Little Mermaid, how will they handle Ariel being a white redhead in the parks and in stores?
