The 80's are the worst offender because that decade of movies is so tied to its time. It's inescapable, every 80's comedy screams 80's movie. It's a sub-genre within a genre.

The comedies from the 60's feel more eternal.

I'm a fan of Monty Python but I can recognize that it is VERY different brand of comedy and will not appeal to everyone.

This.

Now limit it to the comedies that stand the test of time and you might have an argument.

But the 90's and of course the 00's are still to close to show their age.

Early to mid 90's movies have probably got enough age on them now to determine if they have help up or not.

Yeah and the majority of them are just ok.

Not counting the three you agreed with, but out of my list, I think these were made in 95 and earlier and are really great comedies. Could be wrong on the years though.

quote:

Austin Powers
Groundhog Day
Ace Ventura's
There's Something About Mary
Tommy Boy
Billy Madison
Happy Gilmore
Office Space
The Wedding Singer
Cable Guy
The Sandlot
Mystery Men
Robin Hood: MIT
Rush Hour
The Mask
Father of the Bride's
Waynes World
Friday
Clerks
Ed Wood
Shakespeare In Love
Get Shorty
Home Alone
Liar Liar
Romy and Michelle
The Birdcage
City Slickers
A Night At the Roxbury
Waiting For Guffman
Kingpin
American Pie
Life
Heavy Weights
Major Payne

Im pretty sure quite a few more were made pre 95, those are just the ones I consider great. I still think all those are pretty dang good. And im sure im forgetting quite a few movies.

So I have been going through the 90's comedies and I am finding that they don't hold up all that well. Looking over lists of the decade's comedies, only about 6 of them really stood out to me as classics or potential classics: Dumb & Dumber, Office Space, Happy Gilmore, Groundhog Day, Clerks, and The Big Lebowski. Two of the classics of the decade, Big Leboski and Groundhog Day, are technically comedies but don't fit the genre particularly well. There are 6-7 others that I think are still pretty funny but suspect they will continue to age badly. Compared to the listed films from the 70's and 80's, I don't think the 90's fair well at all. I have a feeling that it similar for the 00's once we have some distance from them (although I suspect Apatow's productions will push the decade above the 90's as a whole).

I will never, for as long as I live, understand the fascination with Dr. Strangelove. Maybe I'm too young or just "don't get it", but I've watched it from beginning to end twice and was bored to tears both times. I never laughed out loud and maybe only smirked a few times.

I just don't understand why this movie is so widely considered as one of the greatest comedies of all time.

You must not be old enough to have had to do "air raid" drills in elementary school.

Add Animal House and you have my three favorite stick comedies of all time.

Although am also a big fan of Spinal Tap, Guffman, Best in Show et al.

Also the Big Lebowski. But overall the 90s sucked.

The 00s have seen a return to true comedies.

That's correct, but I wasn't alive during the time period depicted in other films that I appreciate. I just didn't really find it funny.

And IWY, here is how I would rank your lisrt from the 90s.

OK films:

quote:

Ace Ventura's
Tommy Boy
Billy Madison
Happy Gilmore
The Wedding Singer
Cable Guy
Mystery Men
Robin Hood: MIT
Rush Hour
The Mask
Father of the Bride
Waynes World
Shakespeare In Love
Get Shorty
Home Alone
Liar Liar
Romy and Michelle
City Slickers
Waiting For Guffman
Kingpin
American Pie (no American Pie has not aged well in my opinion)
Life

Really good films

quote:

Austin Powers
There's Something About Mary
The Sandlot
Friday
Clerks
The Birdcage

But I have to admit that Office Space and Groundhog Day are classics. I was just under the impression Office Space was made in 2000 and Groundhog Day was in 1989. But A Night at the Roxbury is just terrible in every sense of the word.

Say what?

Also:

Shakespeare In Love

I don't remember that being a comedy...was it? (I may have not ever seen the whole thing)

From reading this thread and seeing lists of movies, I'd say the 80s is the best. Not to mention two of my favorite comedies are from the 80s: Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, and The Great Outdoors.

Three of my favorite 80s comedies weren't mentioned either in this whole thread.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit
A Christmas Story
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Yeah I actually like a lot of those movies. I didnt get to spend a lot of time on the lists. I was on my phone.

I thought I added Airplane but turns out I didnt. And I personally dont consider the Back to the Futures and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest true comedies so I didnt consider them. But I love all four of those movies.
