S4 was good too, although I hate how they changed Jaime and Tyrion's goodbye scene.

Tommen was virtually a figure head the HS was able to control.
This is the answer amongst others given in the thread. There was a king and the king obeyed the HS because he was easily manipulated. Think back and remember that he was being manipulated by Tywin as well before his death.

5) Tyrion somehow became a warrior, beating up his captor. Tyrion has never been a fighter.
Amongst other examples already noted in this thread, I believe Tyrion bashed someone's head in in Season 1 when he was Lady Stark's prisoner and they were attacked by the hill tribes.

You misogynistic bastard, are you saying the less boobs they show the worse the series gets?

Not hyperbole. I can't think of anything good from that season.

Yeah, I believe that some things will be the same, like who sits on the Iron Throne at the end (or if it even exists), but so much shite has changed from the books that it’s not possible it’s the exact same. Cersei is absolutely on borrowed time because Lena Hedey is a phenomenal actress and fun to watch. Cersei will not be in the book endgame.
And then there’s Littlefinger’s death, which was extremely insulting to the character. I do think he will go down to a daughter of Ned Stark slitting his throat with the Valyrian Steel dagger in Winterfell, but Arya wasn’t the one to take him out. It was a Human Eight Ball. Sorry, but Sansa should have figured out for herself what Littlefinger did and then taken him out. Such weak sauce, especially with him whimpering when he was killed. GRRM says for a reason Littlefinger is the most different character from book to show.
But he is wrong. It is Varys that is the most different. Both Varys and Littlefinger have been largely irrelevant for 3 seasons. Varys is debatably the most evil character in the books, when he is clearly a good guy in the show. Removing Varys and his motives ruins the book’s endgame.
Seriously, how is this what GRRM is setting up? Maybe the very, very end is the same, but you remove Varys and Littlefinger as major players and up Cersei, there’s no way the ending is the same.

I think there’s some overreaction on S5. Was it good? No. But was it bad? No. It was meh, boring compared to the last 4.
Season 6 was great. But S7 was rushed, which was why it was bad. I don’t think there’s denying it. A lot of the episodes felt like glorified fan fiction. As far as the endgame being good vs evil and how that wasn’t what GRRM wanted, I disagree. He wouldn’t have introduced the Other (White Walkers) if he didn’t. What else was going to happen with that storyline?
I guess the more fitting end would be that the 7 kingdoms remaining divided because they hate one another and all end up being destroyed with a handful of survivors fleeing to Essos would work better than them coming together at the last minute

Yes, and no.
They’re using his notes, but it reads like bad fan fiction.
Martin surprises you, he doesn’t write about good versus evil, the show... it’s become everything that Martin rejected in his writing. It’s a simple moralistic tale of good vs evil, with characters that are either too pure, or too bankrupt, to be plausible.

Off topic (sorry) but someone should start a tournament to vote on the best fighter on GoT. I’d volunteer to do it miyself, but I’m only on season 5 right now.

I just rewatched the entire series in a binge marathon over the holidays (had lots of PTO to burn).
I’ve also read all the books.
It’s painfully clear when the show writers ran out of content. It’s like the kid in jazz band trying his hand at an ad lib solo for the first time. The rhythm section is laying down the beat and you’ve had sheet music that you’ve been practicing, but now you’re all on your own. You fumble along and it’s close to good, but not great. The audience knows.
Season 7 was the big disappointment for me though. And for all the awesome things that happen it shouldn’t be. But it’s so damned rushed. The whole show has been a slow burn. Then bam, “we’ll let’s hurry this shite along, it costs too much to make these things”.
Robert Heinlein books are like that. He has these great stories playing out at a good pace and then just zips them up out of nowhere in like 5 pages.
I remember picking up the first novel, A Game of Thrones, at a book store (wow remember those?) because it was the employee recommended best. I hadn’t heard anything about it.
I devoured it and patiently waited for the next. Knowing it was going to be 5 novels was frustrating, but hey, he’ll have them done every year or so.
Wait, now it’s going to be 7 books??? And he’s way behind??
FUUUCCKKKK
Oh cool HBO is making it a mini series! This should speed him up!
NOPE!

so true
sad that Tyrion is one of the worst characters now. 0 wit or charm, all his lines feel forced.
Martin really knew how to write that little man

My biggest gripe with Season Five is the burning of Shireen, an act that ruined three characters all at once.
First was Shireen, a likeable character that could have been used better, though she is admittedly minor. The second, Melisandre, who could be an intriguing and dynamic character. The show runners instead have made her dour, and with this act, irretrievably cruel. Later attempts to build sympathy for her (her crisis of faith after Jon’s death) fall very, very flat as a result.
But last, and worst, of all is Stannis, who in sacrificing his daughter acts in a manner completely out of character for such a practical and forceful leader. It’s almost as if the show runners gave up on this character, or had no idea what to do with him once he got to the wall. I don’t know what GRRM’s plans are for Stannis in the books, but if this is it, then GRRM made a mistake here, too. It’s his universe, he can do what he wants with it, but what a dumb way to bring final resolution to Stannis. This feels like the show runners just wanting to trim the cast.

Yep! Luckily, Dinklage can act so it’s still passably good.
Emelia Clarke on the other hand, sweet Jesus. It’s become painful to watch her scenes. And the writers aren’t doing her any favors. In season 7 she’s been one big contradiction, with lines that either go completely against her character, or ignore the logic of the story as it’s been laid out.
And thanks to the #metoo movement we don’t even get much gratuitous nudity.
Sigh.
