I still haven't watched the next episode after that. I instantly lost interest.

I think a lot of people were repulsed, but were already invested in the show at that point. I'm curious to see if season 2 viewership shows a decline from people who just felt like they had to finish out season 1.

The numbers are for sure going to be good. Hell, episode 4, one episode after the gay one, had the highest numbers of the season to that point. Episode 5 had 11 million viewers when the series premiere had 4.7. That episode didn't stop people from watching.

It really frustrated me because I went from "Wow, that is arguably the greatest pilot episode in the history of television" to two episodes later going "Umm, what.". The second longest run time episode by a wide margin was just completely useless to the story. Not even factoring it just being a gay love story, a completely useless episode that doesn't progress the story in itself is frustrating.
I don't care if there are gays on the show. The main kid is gay, whatever. But you do lose credibility with me if you can ask "Would they have made that same exact episode with a straight couple?" and the answer is no. That tells me you're not making that episode for the right reasons.

It wasn't zero because I believe they ended up getting a truck with some supplies. But that could've been done onscreen in about five minutes though.

I guess we'll find out. You could be right.

quote:that episode was great at the beginning (up until the other dude showed up). it did advance the story as it showed how/why nick offerman was able to come by his well fortified and secure encampment and how/why joel and his partner has them as allies, and how they acquired the truck/food/gas/etc to leave town. everything else LOL was extraneous

Strawberry’s man. You really cant overstate the importance of an hour and a half long episode of two guys growing strawberries together in a time like that. Super important to the storyline.
As a straight dude, I can respect that episode. There was some talent behind Ron and Maury’s story. It was done for “woke” reasons but still well acted, written, and directed.
The mall/lesbian backstory is the one I would skip.

I never really watched all the episodes so the answer may be buried in there....
but why did the outbreak suddenly manifest itself all at once? In episode 1, the old lady goes nuts, planes crash, military cordons off areas and it seems like it was all in 24hrs. I assume it was worldwide event in the same timeframe?
Yet the Indian PhD saw evidence 20yrs earlier?

The flour was infected.
It mutated to be able to sustain the temperature of human bodies.

I get the flour angle but why nothing for 20 years then one night, the world (at least that corner) goes nuts?

+1 the weakest episode, IMO

Could you argue that they may have done that if the character (Bill) was straight in the game? I'm not disagreeing but just having a discussion.
I kinda was hoping they hired the voice actor of Bill (W. Earl Brown who most of yall know from Deadwood) to play himself but Offerman surprised me.

The gay thing was gross and more political shove it down your throat bullshite, but it was a great episode. If the wandering dude was a chick, it would have been one of the better episodes that season.

Yea I would say for sure they wouldn't have done that episode (or at least dedicated a 75 minute episode to it) if Bill was straight in the game. If you take gay/straight out of it, it's simply just a telling a love story. Nothing special about it, something that is done in countless shows. But this let them say they got to tell a gay love story, something that hasn't been done really much at all in a big budget mainstream show.
I'm not one on this sight that is always discussing woke stuff, agendas in Hollywood, etc. I actually really dislike that subject and try to avoid politics in movies/tv, but this one was about as in your face pushing an agenda as you're ever going to see imo.
You could seriously watch the entire season, minus that episode, and not skip a beat. One of the main arguments people had for it on here when it was airing was that the character was going to pop up again so it wasn't a waste. Obviously he didn't, so you spent more time developing two characters that are irrelevant going forward than you did anyone else. it doesn't make sense to do that.

That's a good thing at least. It did seem like a notch on the belt type thing though.

I've noticed that with your posts and that's a good thing! I've watched it for years ruin threads. I did figure that episode was to continue to hammer home the idea that countless of these "end of days/zombie" type shows do....even with everything gone to shite...you still can remain human. Show was fine and has me hooked enough to watch 2nd season. I'm like that other poster...Carson...I've played both games and think this season could be interesting if they make some tweaks.

Of what was to come? Eh not exactly. Cordyceps are in actual thing in the incest world that do basically turn bugs into zombies. He just said if the fungus somehow evolved to infect humans it would be a major problem
