Kingdom of Heaven

I started watching the director's (Ridley Scott) cut of Kingdom of Heaven last night, a movie which I'd never experienced. I started watching in my small 'getaway from everyone else' spot in the house and got 20 minutes in and decided this deserves watching on a bigger screen and much better sound system.
I think I'm in for a visual treat. Hope it's not disappointing but I've enjoyed many Ridley Scott movies. Blade Runner being my favorite, which did poorly at the box office but which went on to become a cult classic and define modern science fiction. So I'm thinking it might be good. Certainly the tales of Baelin are a part of history and so it will be interesting to watch.

The director’s cut is excellent IMO.

I got the directors cut and watched it recently.
It remains a deeply flawed film, with not nearly enough back story or build up to Balian or his abilities, with the audience left to fill in that this guy, because he is a blacksmith, is experienced with warfare, even though there’s a scene with him learning how to fight for what appears to be the first time.
Pacing is a bit difficult, sometimes feeling too slow other times breezing through so much at once it causes whiplash.
But it’s pretty and fun and definitely worth a watch.

Another incorrect depiction of the Crusades. Depicting Christians as evil, backward invaders, and the Muslims as enlightened, friendly natives. A load of complete horseshite.

if nothing else, it's a pleasure to look at

Wonderful visuals and some wonderful acting, Irons, Gleeson, Norton, Neeson specifically but paints Saladin and the muslims as great people. Guy was a terrible King in real life but from most accounts a decent person.
Obviously Eva Green, hot.

He’s an audience POV type character who should’ve had some scenes cut. Sicario was brought up on the board in the last day or so, Kate is that type of character only there’s no bloat with her scenes and the movie was better for it.

Did you watch the whole movie?

Kate was also notably out of her depths and didn’t know what the frick was going on.
Balian ran the damn war.
ETA: I actually looked up on ChatGPT why Balian was such a Mary Sue or whatever that term is.
Basically, it said that a lot of the explanation was unsaid and is mostly that he was “noticeably smarter than other characters“ so he apparently could learn warfare quickly, he had prior experience as a siege engineer in a different war, which apparently is more tactical than most modern audiences appreciate, and as a blacksmith, he actually would have been much more experienced in warfare than almost anyone else, despite the fact that they do not explain that in the movie.
All of that sounded like a bunch of hogwash to me.

Great movie but would’ve loved another 30 minutes or so dedicated to their trek through the european forests with the snow. Ridley just absolutely nailed that scenery along with the opening scene of Gladiator.
The Viking was badass.
Also, ol Jamie Lannister is the sheriff that comes after them initially. Never realized it until a couple years ago
2000-2010 was really a great run of movies. Everything from Gladiator to The Prestige to No Country for Old Men. With some Apocalypto, Kingdom of Heaven, etc. thrown in.
