Yeah, there is PLENTY in the book to make a 2 hour movie without adding a bunch of fictional stuff.

You should read the book. It has a white detective, it does not feature a white savior.

First of all, Scorsese said it had a white savior, not me. Secondly, I did read the book.

It's like a 5 hour listen if you do the audio

I just picked it up on Audible. I think its 9 hours. But, I was surprised at how short it was considering what it covers.

Looking forward to the book and then the movie. Let's go!

The book is fantastic. I don't like the sound of them "changing it up".

It was the perfect set-up for a murder mystery, but something didn’t feel right. Scorsese, DiCaprio and De Niro began to realize that the situation was more complex than that. More explicitly, it would be inappropriate to serve up a white-savior Western since white people were also the bad guys: the outsiders who insinuated their way into the Osage and took advantage of their naivety, empowered by apathy from corrupt local law enforcement and townsfolk eager to shake money out of the pockets of their trusting Osage friends.

So, Scorsese started over, seizing on the chance to tell a story that would resonate in a modern era, forcing audiences to confront their own darkest instincts: how far would they be willing to go for the love of money?

I don't disagree with the comic, but this was a little different. The Osage were forced onto what was thought to be useless land which ended up being very rich in oil, and then they were murdered and conned for their oil rights by white folks.

There's no quote of Scorsese saying "white savior" (though he took shite for the concept in his movie Silence). And if people read the article they'd see that they're not changing the story, they're focusing on the suspects (which is probably why DiCaprio wanted to play a suspect instead of the FBI agent). They're not making a non-white into the hero, they're just spending more time on the suspects and less on the cop.

Going by the article on the link, they're not changing a thing from the book or from history, they're just emphasizing the chapters that feature the suspects.

There's a ton of stuff, for sure, but the initial investigation narrative is only part of the book. The outwardly expanding nature of the history Grann tells would make for a highly unconventional film, even for a filmmaker who has no issue bucking some narrative conventions.

I'm curious how Scorsese will make everything fit, but I wouldn't be surprised if things are shifted in such a way that allows the characters portrayed by stars to stay near the center. And I won't have an opinion on whether or not that's a bad thing until I see the movie.

Off the top of my head:

Oppenheimer
Dune Part 2
Asteroid City (Wes Anderson generally has to be mentioned with those insane casts)
Napoleon (Ridley Scott)

Then you have stuff like the Barbie movie, Wonka (with Timothee Chalamet as Wonka), another Mission Impossible movie, etc) that will absolutely draw crowds with the casts they have.

I would also throw in The Killer by David Fincher.

So yeah, stacked year.

Just screened at Cannes. Some are saying the length might be rough for audiences

quote:

@niconamerica

KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON is a magnificent epic that lays bare the pervasive insidiousness of white men. fully engaging, earns its runtime, and sets lily gladstone up for sheer stardom. it’s simply unreal how much strength and sorrow she can convey with just a stare. #Cannes2023

quote:

@filmwithyas

KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON is utterly exceptional & more gripping with every minute. An honest adaptation about the complexities of abuse faced by Osage Indians. Lily Gladstone is the soul of the entire film, delivering an astonishing performance with simply her eyes #Cannes2023

quote:

@NextBestPicture

KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON is an epic crime western with some of Martin Scorsese’s darkest thematic content to date. Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro & Lily Gladstone are all phenomenal. The powerful ending took this from solid to excellent. A tragic rumination on greed & power.

quote:

@ema_sasic

KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON…WOW. A harrowing story that is difficult to watch given the subject matter, but you can’t help but marvel at the mastery on screen. Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro are absolutely incredible. Among top tier Martin Scorsese

quote:

@davidehrlich

Killers of the Flower Moon: Leonardo DiCaprio gives the best performance of his life in a frequently great Scorsese epic that misses the mythic sweep of the book but succeeds instead as a toxic love story.

quote:

Scorsese's KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON is an enthralling cinematic experience, it flies by. It's an honest, humane and extensive telling of the Osage murders. De Niro and Gladstone put in Oscar performances, but it's DiCaprio's disgruntled persona that leaves the biggest mark.

quote:

@davidlsims

KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON is a rolling thundercloud of a movie, a dark romance that builds and swirls into a major examination of American evil. So, so, so, SO good, and so defiant of all my expectations as a fan of the book.

quote:

@firstshowing

Killers of the Flower Moon - Another Scorsese mobster movie, this time about how greed & white supremacy drained this Native American reservation - Osage County. Utterly dark & depressing throughout most of it until Jesse Plemons shows up to wrangle up some criminals. #Cannes2023

Much like my experience with The Irishman, while every filmmaking aspect is technically impressive, didn't have much of an emotional connection with the film + it felt way too long. Even though all of it is captivating, the performances are all top notch, it didn't wow me at all.

quote:

@812filmreviews

KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON simply needed more Lily Gladstone (who’s amazing). Sharp in spots, evocative and imaginative in others. But damn, the blinspots are often glaring here

Seems promising to me. Even the knocks on it are things that I don't really care about, and likely disagree with anyway.

Read the book about 5 years ago. Been waiting for this one to come out. Covid definitely stalled it.

Couple of quotes from that seem to also resonate with this particular story:
quote:

Hell, there’s no God in Mexico. Never will be. We are dealing with a people manifestly incapable of governing themselves. And do you know what happens with people who cannot govern themselves? That’s right. Others come in to govern for them.

When the Lambs is lost in the mountain, he said. They is cry. Sometime come the mother. Sometime the wolf.

Well shite. I enjoyed Larson's Churchill book, I guess I gotta read Garden of the Beasts. Looks like a good companion piece.
