Episode 1 of the Chappelle show had a skit about a blind Black White Supremacist.......and the show wasn't canceled

I don't think it can be topped.

Both shows at their absolute best were closer than many think.

But at their absolute worst, Chapelle is way better than key and Peele.

The worst of Chapelles show was still funny. They worst of Key and Peele was cringeworthy

The only thing that would make Key and Peele hold up better is access to the Chappelle's Show. If Dave wins out no one will see it moving forward.

Absolutely right! There was no such thing as sketch comedy before the Chappelle's show.

Chapelle’s show had exceptionally few misses. Nearly every sketch was a classic over the course of 2 and a half seasons. That’s impressive. SNL is lucky to have 3/5 of their sketches just not crash & burn these days. Dave would routinely go entire episodes where every sketch was a lasting pop culture phenomenon.

Don’t forget: while that first episode had Clayton Bigsby, it practically came straight out the gate with “Pop Copy” which gave us the line:
“You may ask, ‘why, why treat the customer this way?’ Cause, f$&k ‘em, that’s why! You graduated from grade school meaning you don’t have to take s€£t from anyone!”

Chappelle's Show has, in will probably always have, the highest batting average of any show of all time.

I can list like 5 sketches from K&P that have cultural lasting power.

Substitute teacher cant say white names
Liam Neesoms
i said Bittttccchhhhh

frick im running out. There are a lot of funny ones but none that entered and remained in the zeitgeist.

Go back and rewatch CS. There might be 5 sketches that DIDNT make a cultural impact. Its the Coming to America of TV shows, in that almost every part of it is still with us as a call back.

Slap-arse
East-West Bowl
3 Pumps
Any Wendel sketch
...With My Prayers

I don't care if it never entered cultural consciousness, my wife and I quote the Gremlins 2 sketch all the time, that shite was fricking hilarious.

But this isn't a competition, because Seasons 1-2 of Chappelle's Show batted like .800 and mid-tier skits like World Series of Dice and Playa Haters Ball would be all time greats for any other show.

This.

Key & Peele had some great sketches, but even their great ones probably wouldn’t have been stand out sketches on Chappelle’s Show. A great Key & Peele episode has 2 really good sketches, one that’s okay, and one that’s just f$&king weird. Chappelle’s show episodes were just banger after banger after banger.

Key and Peele's problem was consistency

their best skits were 9 or 10/10 funny, like Dave's

but their worst bits were damn near unwatchable

Agree with that.

Chappelle Show was superior, but K&P had some sketches that were amazingly funny. But man, a lot of them missed and missed HARD. And they also carried on way too long a lot of times too.

But K&P deserves credit for their top notch sketches though. The first East/West bowl game sketch was one of the funniest things I had seen in years.

Disagree with this but one of my favorite Key & Peele skits is:

MC Mom

Watch til the end.

Part of it comes from the comedy history of Key and Peele - both from an improv background with prior history on a sketch show. Most of their comedy was character driven. Dave coming from a stand-up background meant it was all idea driven. If you couldn't find humor in the K&P character, you wouldn't like the sketch. If you couldn't find humor in the Chapelle idea, you wouldn't like the sketch.

The latter is a safer bet to be funny, but it's also a lot fricking harder to continually come up with funny ideas for sketches - hence the only 2 seasons.
