EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros just set Kenya Barris to write and direct Wizard of Oz, a reimaging of the fantasy classic, with his Khalabo Ink Society producing.

We all know the story from the 1939 film, but Barris is keeping the creative details close to the vest. It will be a modern reimagining of the iconic musical. His deal closed last week. Sheila Walcott is overseeing for the studio.

Deal comes as the Black-ish creator is in post-production on his feature directorial debut, You People. Barris and Jonah Hill wrote the original comedy together, with a slamming cast that includes Hill, Eddie Murphy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lauren London, Nia Long and David Duchovny, among others.

Originality is dead. I can't wait for the inevitable Gone with the Wind reimagining.

The friends she meets along the way will be crackheads and the flying monkeys will be evil Klansmen.

Why?

This just seems like a high risk low reward kind of situation.

How many times as a classic been remade and the new film is seen on the same level as it?

"Reimagining."

Let me guess:

-The Lion is a flamboyant homosexual with a witch fetish.
-The Tin Man (them) is a black trans indigenous them
-The Scarecrow is a bisexual hermaphrodite, Referred to as Scaxrecrow
-Dorothy and the Wicked Witch are fabulous drag queens
-Toto is a two spirit "furry"

All these hideous remakes these days, do they have to get permission from the original story creators? Or does this fall under some "artistic expression" type of hall pass?

I can give you some guarantees:

Dorothy and Glenda will not be white straight females
WWotW will be a white actor/actress

Are we pre melting yet?

Oh yeah, we're pre melting.

Fwiw Kenya Barris is pretty goddamn funny and a great writer. Not sure about his directing really but I thought BlackAF was pretty good.

Dude, like another poster said, do these remakes, reboots and "reimaginings" ever turn out any good? Like ever? You probably have to go back 35 years to The Fly (1986) to find a worthy candidate. And that original was a low budget, campy horror movie, not a cinematic classic.

Go ahead and tell us why it’s a good thing that Dorothy will be black. We know you’re thinking it
