I swear, I've watched most of this series and have not heard Waylon Jennings mentioned once. Hoping the next episode is all about Waylon, Willie and the outlaw movement.

was the hayride featured very heavily?
Mostly as an alternative for those who were cast aside by the Opry (Elvis and Hank Sr.).

They mentioned him tonight. But his big episode is tomorrow night.

They featured Johnny Cash’s ABC variety show tonight. My grandmother loved Johnny Cash and never missed that show. So this 80 year old lady was watching The Guess Who, Clapton, and every other rock and MoTown act that guest starred.

Maybelle Carter thinking One Toke Over The Line was a good gospel song.

That was funny.
Was never a Cash fan, so this series has been a little Cash heavy for me. Still enjoying it though.

That was the last episode I watched. LOL!
Of all the information I learned, watching this series, is the biggest influence of all, is The Carter Family.

The early recordings and photographs of The Carter Famil and Jimmie Rogers, alone,
make the series worth watching.
In last night’s episode, we’re reminded of Kristofferson’s amazing songwriting talent
and the talent and heartache of George Jones and Tammy Wynette.
So this series is comprehensive.

quote:Equally Jimmie Rodgers. I thought it was just the first generation of C&W stars who took up where Rodgers left off, but the more people they interview the more we find that were listening to their dad and granddad's Rodgers records.

I'd say:
1) Rodgers
2) Carters
3) Hank Sr.
But that's just based on this series. Burns is known to favor certain subjects over others.

I found myself very watching tonight’s episode and as a big Hank Williams fan, those 2 hours felt like 20 minutes.
I have watched that episode alone 4 times already. I haven't been able to move past it. It was perfectly done.

LOL, same here. I've been putting it on in the background during family dinner.

One thing I’ve been disappointed with so far is they kind of breezed through Marty Robbins.
Thought they could have covered him a little more with all of the crossover success and how epic the Gunfighter Ballads records were.

Exactly.
Marty Robbins Western swing influence was significant.

The film is very good and I’ve greatly enjoyed it.
Yet it is highly depressing to me as well to see just how far country music has fallen today.
There is an almost complete lack of authenticity in today’s country artists.

What was it they said about the wheel turning? It'll turn back around. The garbage played today isn't country. It's "bro" music, and it sucks.

Tonight's episode almost lost me when they were talking about some of the artsy guys like Townes van Zandt and The Flying Burrito Brothers, but it picked back up quickly.
Really surprised they didn't mention Linda Ronstadt, who has the best voice of any artist across any genre in my lifetime.
And 7 episodes, no mention of Sonny James.
They should have mentioned Johnny Paycheck tonight, among a few others. Haven't heard David Allen Coe's name either.
Love the extra attention they gave to Dolly. God what a beautiful woman she was in her prime.

There is a ton of music out there right now that harkens back to more old school country sound. I’ve avoided fricking CMT pop country garbage for a very long time, and have to say I’m pretty happy with the current version of country that I’ve found. Good stuff is out there, you just have to look.

Hmmm. I wonder why.
Seriously, Take This Job and Shove It and Would You Lay With Me deserve at least a mention...
