Kathleen Kennedy Admits to “A Bit of Relief” in Stepping Down from Lucasfilm

Kathleen Kennedy admitted to feeling “a bit of relief” after stepping down from Lucasfilm earlier in 2026 following 14 years at the helm of one of the biggest American film franchises.
The longtime producer reflected on the end of her leadership tenure in the Star Wars universe during a Wednesday night interview devoted to her career at Bloomberg’s annual Screentime event in Los Angeles. Asked if she felt “bittersweet“ about leaving Lucasfilm, Kennedy said no. “I suppose there’s a bit of relief. These jobs are not easy and stepping into something like that that George [Lucas] had created was an incredible challenge.”
She recalled asking Star Wars creator Lucas, after he handpicked her as his successor at the company, if he had any material she should look at for direction on storytelling. At the time, Kennedy was a longtime creative collaborator or Steven Spielberg, having produced Jurassic Park, Lincoln and Munich, and had produced other major titles like Back to the Future, Twisters and Gremlins.
“He [Lucas] said, ‘No, no, it’s all here,’” she said, pointing to her head. “I said, okay, well that’s going to be interesting to try and mine that.” (She added that she received “a couple of paragraphs” with story ideas, but no story treatments.)
Kennedy’s tenure at Lucasfilm saw its moments of fan outrage in certain corners (the response to The Acolyte was particularly vicious) and praise (Andor), with Kennedy the face of the brand during both its peaks and valleys. And interviewer Brad Stone, the editor of Bloomberg Businessweek, was quick to ask her about the challenges of satisfying a broad audience including the diehard Star Wars fans.
“Well, I think that that’s the challenge that all franchises [face], certainly something that’s been around now for 50 years. You’ve got people where this means a lot to them,” she said. “But at the same time, the challenge is to try to create something new, something original. So finding that balance is really the toughest thing.”
Stone said certain audiences felt Kennedy listened too much to certain fans. Did she learn anything from that experience? Kennedy maintained that she needed to pay attention to fans “without making that be a referendum,” but also to support artists with clear visions for stories within the Star Wars galaxy.
Her proudest accomplishments in the job, she added, were relaunching the film franchise with 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens and rolling out the Disney+ series Andor and The Mandalorian. She didn’t get specific, meanwhile, when asked about any regrets or potential do-overs. “I mean, I don’t think you can do anything in terms of the movie business where every single thing is going to be a perfect hit,” she said. “I think you learn things, I always like learning things from the movies that we do, the postmortems we do on what worked, what didn‘t. But I’m always proud of the work that’s been done.”

Hey lady, for the rest of us, it's a relief like having a hemorrhoid removed.

Even though I have genuinely enjoyed some of the new SW content, I don't think the peaks were all that high personally, and certainly not worth the lows

This woman is a perfect example for why sometimes, leaving well enough alone, is the best way forward.
She didnt need to "mine" Lucas' brain. So many novels out there. They even had Han and Leia having a boy together. How Han and his son didnt do Indy and Dr jones type shite in the first movie still blows my mind. O wait. A father son dynamic where the dad is a bad arse is illegal in Hollywood.
What did we get instead? Jedi Poppins, Alien Tit Milk and whatever the frick the last movie was.

I got really bored and started some YouTube videos on Lore of movies. Ended up on Lore of the Sith. And rabbit holed a little bit. The Star Wars universe is so damn big and so many things to explore. She is a terrorist.

She failed in the most epic way possible. They had the world by the balls after The Force Awakens. And she proceeded to install woke characters and taylor a space-western sci fi franchise to women and gen-z Disney adults.
She has had a very long career but will always be known for fumbling the Star Wars franchise like someone dropping a tray of lasagna on the kitchen floor.
From a corporate perspective, Lucas Film is still over a billion short of recouping the cost of its acquisition of 4 billion dollars from George Lucas.

It’s almost impressive being given the keys to Star Wars and then fricking up that monumentally

Hopefully, now we will stop getting the feisty British brunette women as the protagonist in every Disney project.
Indiana Jones

She may have destroyed it forever. She’s at least hindered it to the point it will never he looked at the same way again.

This is precisely why it's utter horse shite that every story they tell must intersect with the three generations of the Skywalker family.

Yeah, she pushed people past hating it to just not caring. If people hate it they're still passionate and you can still get them with a good product. Once they're checked out that's a tougher sell.

It’s not going to change until they clean house. You think Trapper Wolf is the one to correct this mess?

You’re right, apathy is the killer and the recent stuff has gotten worse. Star Fighter has potential but it’s infested with girl bosses. The “writer” does have some good things to his credit so we’ll see. Gosling is the perfect actor to carry something like this and if they would nail it it could be really good. It’s just that it has some bad markers. Maybe rewrites and reshoots, fingers crossed.

I was born in 76 grew up with star wars toys and action figures where every stick in the woods was a light saber to my imagination. Grew up loving Sci Fi and Fantasy genre and still my favorite book/movie genre. I should be the target audience. After Gina Cerano was fired from the Mandalorian and After I think the 3rd episode of Boba Fett where they have the emo space vespa driving kids as a big plot point I sort of checked out of the entire franchise and haven't bothered watching anything since.

Yeah, Filoni's furry persona namesake is just proof of more of the same is to come.
