Yea...It started off slow and easy and once I relaxed the controller flicked the switch just a tad and I went flying across the room.

Was Hawg’s the one that was on Jean Lafitte in Buccaneer South?

I’ve been trying to think of the name since the last Urban Cowboy thread. During the disco craze it was the Zodiac and had the full light up dance floor just like in Saturday Night Fever. Then suddenly it was a honky-tonk.

I remember during that time walking the neutral ground on Judge Perez for the parades, and every hot girl had a cowboy hat with the big feather band. It’s amazing how Travolta was responsible for both of the huge cultural crazes of that era, and squeezed in the biggest movie musical of all time for good measure. That’s a run that will never be equaled.

Pam, the daughter of a Houston oil and gas tycoon, couldn't have been in it for the long haul.

Love story aside, it was a fair picture of the Texas coast/refinery culture. Movie title says it all.

An awesome soundtrack, btw. Mickey Gilley.

SNF, Grease, and Urban Cowboy is definitely the greatest non linear actor trilogy ever..

Tom Cruise with Risky Business, All the Right Moves, and Top Gun is a distant 2nd.

Funny how between that and Saturday Night Fever, Travolta was in two good movies that both expertly captured two extremely different lifestyles.

And the real life backstory behind Gilleys is pretty interesting as well.

Nothing says I love you like a new single wide trailer house and your girl's name on a license plate in the back glass of your pickup!

And it’s not like the movies simply cashed in on the current trends. The honky tonk/cowboy trend was virtually created by that movie. SNF didn’t create the disco trend, but it definitely exploded it. The soundtracks of both movies both played key roles as well, especially SNF and the Bee Gees.

And some of the biggest evidence of this is the fact that a place like Chalmette had the Zodiac and then Hawg’s. It wasn’t like discos were only in the big cities, but a place like Chalmette had a pretty big disco with the lighted floor and everything - not just a hole in the wall place.

Yes, although I was too young to say firsthand about them. And they both had that grit element to them, whether it’s the smoky shitty disco with the attached strip bar or the shitty trailer Bud and Sissy lived in, you were really there.

And they were both basically subculture movies that brought the storylines to a relatable and normal viewpoint.

Both are sneaky dark films, too, especially SNF. The Travolta character in each is essentially a Los playing the same, talented yet immature and not too bright, stereotypical guy for the region.

Those two films are by far the most influential that I can remember as far as trendsetting for a blip in time.

Really, the only other close to it was Clueless. For those of us who saw it live, every chick at my school thought she was Cher or Dion for about a year and a half. The stockings, the short yellow skirts with midriff bearing dress blouses and baby doll shoes..... 11 yr old me was never so in love with so many girls...

Sorry... Just Had flashbacks of mid 90s elementary/Jr. High dances... Couldn't help it...
