And holy shite is this movie a white trash dream. I was rooting for either Bud or Sissy to die because both of them are such pieces of trash. The only character that was somewhat likable was Pam (the woman Travolta cheated on Sissy with). I mean seriously. Working at a factory, living in the middle of Texas where the only way to prove your manhood and have fun is to ride a mechanical bull. Who would find that life appealing?

Until he started beating Sissy, I was halfway pulling for the convict to get everything he wanted.

You should try Brokeback Mountain. Seems more fitting to your tastes

Biggest flaw in the movie. Guys like Bud would never abandon the gravy train. Hell or maybe they would, if he's as gullible and dumb as he is portrayed.

OP also obviously has no concept of juts how big HonkyTonks and the "Texas Cowboy" scene was in the early 80s. everyone in the region, even into the Ark-La-Tex (oil country) and beyond, thought they were extras in Dallas or Urban cowboy.

The characters in the movie, yes, are semi white trash, but the vibe an dtye moment it captured was perfect

I saw the movie in Jr. High when it came out and the scene where Bud's aunt came into their trailer and saw the sink full of dirty dishes and says "Y'all live like pigs" cracked me up. To this day I can't let a dirty glass or dish in the sink with out washing it because of that scene.

I love this movie.

Good lord that woman is fine in that movie. She didn't look nearly as good in Funny Farm.

Scott Glenn was legit terrifying. I remember doing a double take the first time I saw him in Silence of the Lambs.

in high school we frequented Gilley's before the movie ever came out. It was an interesting place for a high school kid to be on any night - good chance to either get your arse kicked, get laid, and for sure get drunk. Once the movie came out it became adult disneyland and lost some of its "charm", although the talent sure got better.

That movie pegged that era perfectly. Everyone had a cowboy hat with feathers! LOL

at Bobby Cure's in Chalmette they had contests with women riding the bull. Like every good contest featuring women, there was lots of nudity.

At the time the movie came out there was a Mexican dude where I worked. He had the entire Urban Cowboy thing going on every day he came to work; hat, shirt, jeans, boots. Somebody asked me who he was and I came back with "Juan Travolta". It stuck, from then on that's what everyone called him. He hated my guts when he found out but fortunately it was just a summer job.

The movie does capture the times perfectly.

I rode the bull at Gilleys in the very early 80's and its a lot harder than it looks!! That bar, and massive parking lot was jumping back in the day.
