They asked for more episodes in season 8 or a season 9 to fully develop the plot of Daenerys turning from good guy to bad guy but it wasn't approved. And so we got the shite product where she went from good guy to bad guy in 2.5 episodes, which made the whole season just feel dumb.
I don't know who deserves the blame, but season 8 is where it fell off the rails.

I'm not even that mad about Arya taking out the Night King; you could say that cheated us out of Jon's rightful journey, but Arya had evolved into the perfect killing machine. If you needed one person dead, she was the tool to do it.

But the Dany thing was so clumsy...

frick Sansa and her bitch attitude. Worried about politics when the apocalypse is upon you.

Same thing with Sam, mad because Dany roasted his father and brother. Well, daddy both deserved it, and asked for it; and brother chose to go out that way too. They were both at war against her, fought in the field. And both were offered a chance to kneel (surrender), live, and retain their titles. Tyrion even suggested banishment to the Wall, but Randyll Tarly refused that before Dany could make a decision.

And everything from the moment Euron shoots the second dragon down on, is idiotic.

Well, I guess I should have said I didn’t have time to dwell on how I thought the story and characters should arc. I just watched and enjoyed.

I mean I’m happy for you, but needing to ignore the story and characters in order to enjoy the show or feel satisfied with it, means it’s a poor show (ending is more accurate, but you get the point

And we’re not exactly talking about Avatar or something where the spectacle is the point. The shows entire popularity and premise is built on the lore, plot, and character development, regardless of binging or not binging. The big set pieces set it apart as a TV show, but that is not what made the show great

so again, glad you were able to enjoy it on your rewatch, but saying it’s way better when you ignore everything that made people love it in the first place, isn’t exactly valuable or insightful discourse here

Who has a better story than a character who they literally didn’t include in an entire season

Yeah whether or not Bran is king in the books isn’t really all that important (mostly because that book will never be released) and personally I don’t believe that would be where GRRM would end it, and him telling them the ending doesn’t mean a.) he told them the truth or b.) they also used that same ending he told

By the point he said that, the two versions were already distinctly different stories with a lot of key characters and plot points. Bran especially.

So my point is, even if Bran WAS made king in the book, it still in all likelihood would’ve been done is a much better way that actually made sense with Brans storyline or there would be a major reason why he chooses to take that route or a sacrifice he ultimately has to make for what he feels is the greater good

Let’s be clear, Bran being king isn’t just bad because no one wants Bran to be king, it’s bad because the show spent painstaking effort and time to show him running around becoming the raven, and talking about not giving a shite about all the people politics, because he knew like everyone knew, the real threat is north of the wall.

And that is the way they write Bran for the entire plot of the show up until the last scene where he goes “oh sweet the iron throne! JK about all that other stuff I said I’ll take it!” And everyone does an Ewoks celebration

They built him up as potentially one of the main final players of the entire end game of the show with a number of cool ways to do so, and they spent a lot of time to build this up when following the books, then as soon as D&D took over completely they literally cut him out the entire next season and made him a walking blank for the remainder of the time

I may be mistaken, but from everything I remember it was HBO that wanted to extend the show but Dumb & Dumber refused.

It made my day when the Star Wars project they rushed through GoT's ending to get to was cancelled without so much as a pilot.

I came to the show late too, binging it last year. I will be honest, at first watch I loved it all. Yeah, I saw the precipitous drop off and said “wtf” at the ending, but the series overall was so vast and immersive, and still better than most of what is passing for entertainment on TV now, so I enjoyed it a great deal.

That being said…

I have rewatched multiple times and skipped around to watch certain parts again. Now that I am more familiar with it all, I am far more pissed about the waning quality and derisive of the ridiculous end. I can completely understand how livid people were who had watched it in real time, waiting for seasons to drop, investing so much time in it.

It is still totally worth watching.

It can be hard to end shite well. I suppose that's why GRRM still hasn't finished the books.

I read an article a few years back discussing this. That Martin has got himself stuck as he had done such a great job building the story arcs but made it so much harder to bring them to their finish. That to each character justice it will take a lot of work to finish their arc.

Why GOT failed in the last 2 seasons has so many great characters never got the ending they deserved.

Damn, I didn’t mean to stir up a hornets nest today. Glad I wasn’t invested in the show for 8 years. I was only invested for about a month. Easier to overlook stuff. Also helps that I rarely hate any movie or show, and rarely get pissed that something ends differently than I wanted or expected.

That said, M. Night Shamalamadingdong can suck my dick for “Lady In The Water”. Truly the only time I considered walking out of a theatre and demanding my money back. I’m still salty about that piece of shite.

i need to start a thread so i can understand why everyone hates this movie so much. I thought it was merely OK and like a young adult / older kids movie.

Martin said from the beginning GoT needed 10 full seasons to tell the whole story.

And 50 years to finish the books.

Yeah I mean clearly GRRM has no idea how to truly wrap up the books but that’s also not really comparable to ending the show because the show has already streamlined so much that the path was much easier to walk to have a successful ending. Sure there would’ve always been some discourse or hot takes about it no matter how they ended it, but the one that we got was not only bad but at times seemed to openly work against and mock the character development and story that had built towards before. I don’t even think you need like a crazy amount of additional time to make the series feel a lot more complete and make sense. Hell even if they just ended the show after Jon kills Dany, they would’ve been in worlds better shape on how people viewed the ending in general(but still would’ve been pretty bad)

GRRM has like 1000 years of lore to make sure all lines up correctly and makes any logical sense for 150 characters. Now that’s his fault and I have no sympathy for him, but I can atleast understand and relate to the issue being a writers block more so than the sear lack of care and focus from the shows writers in the last few seasons, the last season especially.

I too binged the show (last year) but hated the ending, not because it wasn’t what I wanted (no one wanted Ned Stark to die or for that matter Rob and his family) but stuff like that made the early seasons great) but the last season was just lazy lazy writing.

Sanderson has already said he's unsuited to do it because he would give a happy ending and that's not what GRRM is shooting for.

That said, if GRRM handed him the series, Sanderson could probably finish it in like 2 years over 4 books

Seasons 1-6 is awesome television. I like to rewatch through season 6 and leave it as an ambiguous ending. In seasons 7 and 8 I feel that they Marvelfied it and substituted great dialogue and weaving plotlines for action and jokes. It's such a shame that Martin could never finish the books and Benioff and Weiss wanted to end the show fast for a Star Wars gig . It's probably easier to swallow when you're binging it and there's not years between seasons and weeks between episodes to theorize. Still, the cast, crew and fans deserved so much better.

Justice for the White Walkers

Nobody can ever convince me they shouldn't have sacked Winterfell then headed south and won the whole thing
