re: John Williams vs Hans Zimmer: Who's the better composer?

As far as style is concerned, you can't compare the two. Williams made his name in symphonic film scores while Hans Zimmer is more electronic. Both of them are at the top of their game in their respective music styles. However, if we are going for iconic music, Williams wins that competition hands down.

put Williams as more of the "pop" sounding movie scores, and Z
Williams was also the principal conductor of the Boston Pops for years

I mean…not really. Star Wars was lifted from other composers and Indians Jones/Superman were just derivatives of that
And yet all three are iconic are they not? Just about every composer, whether consciously or subconsciously, has lifted from other compositions. When contemporary composer Osvaldo Golijov was charged with plagiarism back in 2012, Alex Ross of the New Yorker wrote:
quote:
Golijov can be defended on the grounds that there is a long history of borrowing and outright theft in classical music. In the Baroque era, Bach, Handel, and other masters routinely recycled their own music and reworked the music of others; the idea of the composer as a singular genius blazing an original path was essentially alien before the advent of Beethoven.
Film composer James Horner was legendary for recycling his own compositions throughout his career. Hans Zimmer has also been guilty of this from time to time. Williams isn't unique in this regard.

Williams is iconic and I couldn't imagine other music in some of those scenes.
Personally, I like Zimmer better. His music stirs something I side of me. Not to mention how well his stuff helps build the tension in Inception and Interstellar. It just adds another level of seat-gripping anticipation to me.

Idk how popular of an opinion it is, but Lion King (the original) may be my favorite Hans Zimmer movie.

Williams does a better "big but conventional, classical" score.
Zimmer does a better, "nuanced, textured, more modern, regardless of the scope" score.

This. It's a non-discussion.

This is spot on. I prefer Zimmer but understand why Williams is the GOAT.
The Thin Red Line and Last Samurai are extremely well done

One is great, the other is very good.

Williams paved the way for Zimmer. Both are excellent.

Close encounters of the 3rd kind was Williams too right?

Hans is runner up pretty easily, but the gap between them is massive. Williams is by far the best all time and likely to be the best of all time forever. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Jaws. Plus Harry Potter, E.T., and others
