All three roughly the same age.

All three Academy Award winners.

All three have impressive box office resumes with Foster slightly ahead in ticket sales, then Bullock then Hunter, but they are relatively close.

All three have done successful Indy flicks.

All three, to some degree, have done successful comedy although two clearly excel in that regard.

All three have done drama ... two have done successful period drama.

How would you rank them as actresses. They are, of course, not Meryl Streep level in terms of acting chops but all three have made some really good movies.

How would you rank them, in what order?

I'd rank them as you have them listed in acting.
Reverse that order if OT list on looks.

Holly (Raising Arizona is GOAT)
Sandra (She seems like a cool woman and would be fun to hang with)
Jodie (A good actress but to much of an "activist" for my taste. Shut up and act)

Is she? I would guess Sandra Bullock has sold way more tickets than the other two combined.

Holly Hunter is the wife in The Incredibles and The Incredibles 2. That's about $2 billion in revenue.

You may be right, I initially looked at adjusted dollars but this by the numbers source seems to indicate something different. Hunter is the oldest, followed by Foster and then Bullock.

Bullock has a couple more major main stream box office hits that grossed big numbers for sure.

taking personal politcal views out of the equation:

The roles to which Foster was nominated for her AA's were far more technically demanding.

Why would you mention Sandra Bullock in the same breath as Hunter/Foster?

Sandra Bullock is fricking terrible.

If we are talking Best Actresses over 50 but younger than 62, you've got to add a lot more to the list

Julia Roberts
Helena Bonham Carter
Nicole Kidman
Patricia Clarkson (one of my favorites)

Tammy Hemphill (The Firm)is the only one of those I knew she was in.

I know her for Broadcast News, Raising Arizona, Always, The Piano, A Life Less Ordinary, Living Out Loud, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and other older movies.

Is she good in Batman vs. Superman?

Is The Big Sick good?

Checkmate, bitches.

And I think she can hang at the box office, if you add up the Harry Potter movies with her other major franchise appearances as well as the sheer volume of her work.

I was thinking more in the 55-65 range and was focusing more on those three because of the similarities of their careers.

Your list, different kind of actresses although you could definitely make an argument for Roberts and Carter I suppose.

Clarkson .... could she really be considered a lead? She's 60 years old but not really an impressive award list or nominations list compared to the others. She's a great character supporting actress though no doubt.

Kidman, 52 years old, can't do comedy to the best of my knowledge, unless I am forgetting something? There are questions about her range.

Bonham-Carter is interesting. 53 years old. She's a little quirky and not too main stream but she definitely has the chops. She is one of my favorite actresses no doubt.

Julia Roberts ... she's the youngest of the bunch at 52 and she's won an Oscar for Brockovich so yeah, she could be included although she is really on the cusp for this group age wise imho.

I suppose if we start going that young we would have to include Paltrow but, here again, she's only 47.

Judy Davis might be worthy of this poll. She'd be hitting the upper limit at 65 but what would hold her back is her awards, wins and nominations.

I've always been a big fan of Emma Thompson and she certainly has the awards and at 60 years of age is still going strong ... but has she pulled off comedy?

I can't think of one.

I think Hunter and Foster are fairly close.

Bullock does what she does fairly well, but I don't see her with the range of the other two.

She's a character actress, not a (traditional) lead. Now, I think character actors generally have better chops (e.g. PSH) and that is true with Bonham-Carter, but I don't think she has been asked to carry a movie. I think she could have, like McDormand. For example - McDormand brilliant in the quirky leads she has drawn (primarily by her husband and brother-in-law, and also in things like 3 Billboards), but is legendary in support roles.

(To tie back to the OP - McDormand and Hunter used to room together while trying to break into films.)

She's probably done more comedy, of one sort or other, than anything else. Her character in Harry Potter is comedic, and she's done several comedy roles in smaller films and TV. She was also in Primary Colors, which is a dark comedy of sorts, and was the female lead in Junior, the movie in which Arnold gets pregnant. She was also in Love Actually, Pirate Radio, Nanny McPhee and 2 of the Men in Black movies.

She was even in The Young Ones.

I see she's also in the upcoming Cruella De Ville movie with Emma Stone.
