Who cares dude. Cavill really wasn't that popular, and I'm someone that's been defending MOS on here since day 1

Paradise Lost: The duo describe this HBO Max series as a Game of Thrones-style drama set on the all-female island that is Wonder Woman’s birthplace, Themyscira, filled with political intrigue and scheming between power players. It takes place before the events of the Wonder Woman films.

Will there be scissoring? It won't really be Game of Thrones-style unless there's lots of scissoring.

Never heard of this "authority"

quote:

Speaking at the DC Studios presentation, James Gunn elaborated on what fans can expect from The Authority movie – starting with what it is!

"The Authority. So this is one of my real passion projects, I've been working really hard on it with a writer, is we're starting to put together the entire story," Gunn said.

"Yeah, this is a big movie and I don't know how many of you know are familiar with The Authority... The Authority is a very different kind of superhero story. They are basically good intention, but they think that the world is completely broken and the only way to fix it is to take things into their own hands, whether that means killing people, destroying heads of state, changing governments, whatever they want to do to make the world better. And we'll see how that journey goes for them. But as I said earlier, there's morally gray characters of which these are."

The Authority was a superhero team spun out of another comic book series, Stormwatch, which was part of the independent comic imprint WildStorm before it was absorbed by DC. Writer Warren Ellis took over the series in Vol. 2, transforming Wildstorm Universe lore significantly. While writing the WildC.A.T.S./Alien crossover event comic in 1998, Ellis killed off a bunch of the Stormwatch characters he didn't personally create or want to use, taking the surviving characters (Jenny Sparks, Jack Hawksmoor, Apollo and his husband Midnighter, etc.) into a new series, The Authority, in 1999. The Authority's main selling point was being a team that operated unilaterally, independent of politics, law, or ethics, doing whatever was necessary to complete their missions and/or goals.

I love Gunn’s movies but can’t help to be underwhelmed here.

I guess the distinction of DC Elseworlds is good to avoid confusion with the main DCU. And possibly even tie all worlds into Crisis many years down the line.

It’s still extremely unclear how the previous films fit in though. So there’s a new Superman and Batman w/ Damien, presumably different characters than either Batfleck, Keaton, or Cavill’s versions… but the Themyscira show is set before Gadot’s Wonder Woman? And then you have whatever becomes of The Flash if it does well. It’s hard to decipher which things are canon or not, and seems very convoluted.

I don't think anything prior to Shazam will be considered canon. They'll just use the Flashpoint to start over. It will be confusing but not much different than what Marvel will do with the Fantastic Four and X-Men.

Personally I wish they divided Movies, TV and animation into three universes and didn't worry about continuity between them. It wouldn't hurt my brain to understand that the HBOMax version of Batman is different than the DCU version. I just get really tired of the Disney strategy of one giant universe that I'm supposed to watch 52 weeks a year to keep up.

I thought he wanted to start younger, like with a Superman origin story? But for Batman the very first iteration will have Bruce Wayne's son as Robin?

Authority was one of the best series of the turn of the century, but while the gay characters were accepted then, they’ll now be seen as Hollywood forcing homosexuality on us.

A shame, because Midnighter is a great take on Batman.

This is disingenuous and you know it. There's a difference in source material vs changing it just because. Nice of you to throw that in there when no one else brought it up. Definitely your MO.

Batman origin has been done to death. We've never had a Robin. I'm excited for the fresh take.

Also no there will be no superman origin story either.

Great storylines- some of the best of the early 2000s

Extremely edgy for the time- the team comes into a fight drunk. Gay Superman/Batman pastiche, The Superman character is assaulted by Captain America, etc.

Gunn didn't do the first SS movie. That was David Ayer. He did the second one.

The second Suicide Squad and Peacemaker are both great. Both showed you can have a sense of humor and have fun in a superhero movie. Polka Dot Man, The Weasel, and Eagley all crack me up. GUnn is the exact guy for this project.

I guess he axed the Smallville animated show Tom Welling and Rosenbaum were hyping at one time?

Thought he and Rosenbaum were good friends.

IIRC he said he wanted a younger Superman but not an origin story. Like, year 2 Superman.
