re: It’s time to realize Star Wars is the most overrated franchise in cinematic history

Its factually the highest appraised franchise in movie history,
And this is why it’s overrated. It is appraised too highly. Fans keep going in expecting one thing but getting disappointed. And they will keep going in because of the foundation built 40 years ago, not what happened 18 years ago. If the movie did average numbers no one would call it overrated. You are pointing out the reason why it’s overrated. The juice hasn’t been worth the squeeze in a long long time

The entire franchise is riding off the backs of 2 1/2 films.
The Ewoks section of ROTJ is meh.
Prequels = Drudgery, filled with wooden characters
Rogue One = Decent but most people cared more about seeing vader than anything
TFA = Remake of ANH with Girl! and other slop buckets
TLJ = No idea, won’t watch

Exactly. Someone used box office numbers to justify why it’s not overrated. Wat. And then the person you replied to uses franchises that are appropriately rated and not up for discussions as top tier/great franchises in comparison to Star Wars.

Ya, i kind of agree - especially if you only look at the films. Personally, i thought Rogue One was a good movie. But outside of that, not a lot going on. Prequels had a good story but just shockingly bad delivery / production. Both installments of the sequal trilogy haven't been much better - one was a complete rehash of ANH and TLJ speaks for itself.
Star Wars has just failed to delivered in the movies, but its an incredibly universe with so much potential. The Clone Wars, and to a lesser extent Rebels, cartoons are actually very very good and entertaining shows. One of the episodes in Clone Wars may have the best battle scene seen in the franchise.

Yes, the franchise is overrated. Like others have said, there are 2 films worth watching, the rest is fluff.
Rogue One was bad arse.
Name the Star Wars movies, that if they weren't SPECIFICALLY Star Wars, you'd consider better than, say, The 5th Element or Guardians of the Galaxy.

I’ll use this thread to say I thought Solo was pretty awesome

I would have put Rogue One above The Fifth Element and at least on par with Guardians of the Galaxy, granted they're two completely different kinds of movies (comedy v. tragedy)

They've been this since Return of the Jedi. What do you think the point of Ewoks were?

I agree only Empire was a great movie and return was just okay.
Tlj y took away my love more than the prequels.

Not really. People generally agree that the later movies suck, but that really has no effect on the originals.
No "franchise" will succeed if it's put into the hands of people who have no creative talent.

So the prequels while paling in comparison to the orginals were in reality the blockbusters in the bigger picture. That was the best decision he ever made; made him ungodly rich...and it convinced Disney that this franchise is suck-proof.
He was already ungodly wealthy. The SW movies, the Indiana Jones movies, and he owned ILM as well. Hell, he used to own Pixar but was so busy he wound up selling it. I think he eventually sold everything to Disney more because he was bored running that media empire then anything else.
Now he has the best of both worlds... and a little extra pocket change. If movie does really well he can bask in its glow. If its unpopular he can happily sit back and casually tell people he could have made a better movie.

Rogue One > all other Star Wars movies
Posted on 6/17/18 at 8:36 pm to 13SaintTiger
Dude, even the original trilogy isn't that good. It was just so fricking unique. The acting is horrendous in Star Wars. Empire Strikes Back is the only actually very good movie in the whole damn franchise. And there isn't a single movie that isn't without a plethora of issues. It's a good set of movies that we're venerated by giant nerds who had never seen nerddom displayed on such a grand scale to become this phenomenon that now has outsized expectations. It's laughable. People act as if the original trilogy is a work of utter perfection but that the sequels were terrible. They aren't that far apart in quality. Only in novelty. And racism...

But due to the original trilogy, it's still my favorite of all time
Everything is elevated because it's Star Wars; a modestly decent movie becomes badass. We've been both disappointed and yet still teased ever since Ep 1 hit the screens.
Just imagine if they could ever get it right... it would be insane how much money it will make. And just like a big league slugger that's been in a slump, we hold our breath every time we get another chance to see one. It might be the one we've been waiting on.

Honestly, the inverse is ALSO true. An "okay" movie will be classified by fans as "terrible", "horrible", "SJW trash".

I figured this out as a kid in the 80s.

Here’s the thing: there are only 2 objectively great films out of 11. That’s an issue.
Deadspin had a good article before TFA came out basically saying the same thing. The article was "what if the new Star Wars movie sucks?" and calls out that the franchise basically consists of 2 great movies, 1 okay movie, and 3 terrible ones (depending on how you feel about RotS).
I think most people just consider "Star Wars" be the OT, with everything that came after it being expanded universe stuff that you can either enjoy or cast aside. I hated the PT, so it doesn't color or cloud my opinion of Darth Vader when watching the OT. I'm not a fan of the ST, so I also don't think about the demise of Luke and Han and what they fought for.
I've basically discounted the PT and ST as fan fiction.
