Has there been a movie, not a documentary, which involved the story of the Acadians and their expulsion and exile into Louisiana from Canada?

Yes....it's called Southern Comfort.

Belizaire the Cajun - released back in '86. Actually was a very good flick.

I tell people from outside Louisiana that The Water Boy is closer to a documentary than fiction. Let’s be honest - almost nothing in that movie would raise an eyebrow if you saw it happen down the bayou.

Beat me to it. My childhood horse was the main character’s horse in this film.

Aside from everything in this movie, yes

My friend wrote a book called The Roots of the Bayou: Acadians and Isleños on Bayou Lafourche. It’s on Amazon and he put a ton of research into it. Really solid read if that’s your thing.

I would imagine you're looking for a dramatized version of Longfellow's Evangeline. Let me know if you find one because I'd be interested in checking it out, too.

Best doc is Against the Tide.

I had an old bootleg VHS tape of the silent film "Evangeline" (1929), with Dolores Del Rio. The print had some damage and missing parts, but I understand the film was later restored, and the now circulating copy looks excellent. I'd like to see this remastered print.

There's a rather ridiculous portrayal of a Louisiana Cajun community in the Universal horror b-film "The Mummy's Curse" (1944). As I recall the actors portraying the Cajuns play them more like Italians. The movie is quite lame except for a single scene, in which the Mummy's beloved mate is resurrected, and arises from the muddy muck of the swamp. That scene is a knockout, and the Mummy's beloved is played by actress Virginia Christine, who later on became a familiar tv-commercial spokeslady, Mrs. Olson, hawking coffee.

IIRC there is a statue of her in the role someplace in Acadiana.
DW Griffith filmed 'The White Rose' (1926) on location in Acadiana, and shot some scenes at famous houses in the region such as Shadows on the Teche, where he signed the famous door.

In The Hanged Man (1964) they dress like gypsies and talk w/French accents.
Dark Waters (1944, written by a Tulane grad) is not much more realistic but a bit more respectful, as a large Cajun family welcomes the heroine to a fais do do. I discussed the film in my Pick Of The Day thread.
The mid '50s TV western Jim Bowie, set in 1830 LA, devotes at least one episode to Cajuns and a plot to... Leave the US & rejoin France! (How would they like it there now?). If you can accept the premise it's not bad, and treats the Cajuns w/some dignity. I discussed the episode in the TV Westerns thread.
