Star Wars, Episode IV.

Darth Vader boards the Rebel transport ship. The music. Menacing. You have no idea who he is, but he wants those plans. What plans? Who is the woman in white? The droids? Tatooine and Luke Skywalker. Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru - why are they holding Luke back? What do they know?

Obi-Wan Kenobi? Why is he the Princess' only hope? Old Ben? Sandpeople. The Force. Storm Troopers killed Luke's family. Mos Eisley. These are not the droids you are looking for. Han Solo? Who shot first? Him or Greedo?

The Millennium Falcon.

You get dropped into the middle of a story that is clearly epic, but you have no idea what is going on. A cognitive dissonance is created and almost 40 years later, it still captures the imagination of hundreds of millions of people.

Seriously. Is there a 30-40 minutes in movie history that compares to this in cultural impact?

I know what it is called. It is all Star Wars. I was differentiating.

What 30-40 minutes is more significant culturally? It is a legitimate question on a Movie Board.

I am calm. I just thought it was an interesting thing to think about.

umm, I knew exactly what was going on b/c I can read.

quote:

It is a period of civil war.
Rebel spaceships, striking
from a hidden base, have won
their first victory against
the evil Galactic Empire.

During the battle, Rebel
spies managed to steal secret
plans to the Empire's
ultimate weapon, the DEATH
STAR, an armored space
station with enough power
to destroy an entire planet.

Pursued by the Empire's
sinister agents, Princess
Leia races home aboard her
starship, custodian of the
stolen plans that can save her
people and restore
freedom to the galaxy....

Ok. Fine. I mean, overall. The context is largely lacking, and that is part of the genius of it.

This can be said for Pretty much the first 30-40 minutes of all iconic movies. I could sensationalize the first 30 minutes of the Godfather to read that way

I totally agree with your theory. Too bad George Lucas tried his hardest to frick it up in 1-3.

are you serious with this comment?

Knowing that the re-releases are the only versions most people will see is really sad.

Star Wars is arguably the most important film franchise in history. It already is the most profitable film franchise in history. It creates a frenzy every time a new film is announced. There are thousands of internet groups devoted to it. Its presence can be found on toy aisles in every store throughout five decades. Its creativity spawned the birth of multiple companies that now literally own Hollywood. Large groups of men and women dress up as these characters at huge conventions and gatherings multiple times each year. Its presence can easily be found in movies, TV shows, theater, music, and literature.

Yes, I would say that the first 30-40 minutes of Star Wars IV (A New Hope) is probably the most important 30-40 minutes of film history, at least top three (first actual motion picture and the first film that used sound).

I wish I was in my dad's shoes 80 years ago when he saw it on opening night at the theatre across from Chimes at lsu.

Back before they killed you and your family for drinking underage at LSU

The last 30-40 minutes of 2001: A Spacy Odyssey were more important.

Any 30 minutes of Citizen Kane is more important to movie history than any half hour of any Star Wars movie.

Star Wars was a nostalgia piece taken from serials, pulps, comics, and sci-fi paperbacks. It was fantastic repackaging for an audience that was, for the most part, unaware that everything they were seeing had been done before.

It's a great pop tune. It ain't Mozart.
