DDL in Gangs of New York is better than anything Bale has or ever will put out.

Yes. More range and just as much depth. Only better actor of the last 20 years was PSH.

False. Bale was just as good in the Fighter. He was just as good in the Machinist. He was just as good in American Psycho. He was just as good in the Prestige. And he was just as good in the Big Short.
I need to see Hostiles. Another movie that people haven't seen enough is Out of the Furnace. He is unreal opposite of Woody Harrelson and alongside Casey Affleck, who is a force. He was also wonderful in American Hustle, 3:10 to Yuma, and Rescue Dawn.

He has much better range than DDL. That's certainly one indicator.

Won’t argue with you on The Fighter and American Psycho. But the Prestige and the Big Short, both of which I loved, just as good as DDL as Bill the Butcher?
Haven’t seen The Machinist in its entirety

But when you look at the range bale has it is incredible, from the machinist, American psycho, 3:10 to yuma, American hustle, the fighter and of course one of the best version of any superhero we've seen on film.
Now Bale has an incredible resume, and he is a wonderful actor, but his Batman/Bruce Wayne is just a little overrated.

Another problem is that, because I don't like him, I haven't gone back and watched American Hustle (which he does get a lot of kudos for). I haven't seen 3:10 to Yuma yet, but I will get around to it eventually.
You really need to watch both of these.
I agree on his performance in the Batman movies, but I found Nolan's production lacking in some specific areas that really annoyed me.

DDL is the greatest that ever lived. I have no doubt he could play any role he wanted to.

Daniel Day Lewis is the better dramatic actor. Christian Bale is the more versatile actor.

It's hard to compare these two actors because their movies are vastly different. DDL's films are more 'Oscar worthy' and Bale's movies are 'blockbusters.' Even though Bale has done Oscar worthy work, his movies are for the masses while DDL' films are for the art of cinema.

Bale has more blockbuster types, but also plenty of oscar type movies as well

I don’t think DDL could do what Bale has done. Just imagine DDL in some of Bale’s roles and it’s makes me cringe.
But Bale could easily handle what DDL has done. Especially if you give him 5 years between movies to prepare for it

I don't think you can compare because Bale will take a lot of different roles and DDL selects certain ones. Both are great actors. DDL is one of the best ever, but you can definitely put Bale up there because of his range.

When I watch Christian Bale act in a movie, I still see at least a little Christian Bale, far less than most actors. When I see Daniel Day Lewis, I only see the character he is playing. I never see any of him, and Lincoln is the perfect example.

So Bill the Butcher is a better performance than Fallon/Borden? Or do you mean Daniel Plainview? Because Bill and Plainview are the same thing.
DDL is a phenomenon. And that he was able to learn to sing for a movie is pretty telling of his commitment to learning a role. But let's stop this nonsense about him being some untouchable talent. Nothing he ever did was ever as good as PSH in Capote. And PSH has far more range than DDL. Robin Williams is also in the conversation for his roles in the Birdcage and The World According to Garp.
Bale's performance in the Fighter was at least as good as DDL in Gangs of New York. There was far more nuance to Dicky than Bill the Butcher. Bill is an egomaniacal, power tripping murderer. Dicky is a jealous, loving, can't get out of his own way brother who is at turns comedic and tragic. Fallon/Borden is a subtle portrayal of not just commitment to a goal and a life, but to family, love and the dynamic between two very different brothers who are played by the same actor. Few people can claim to have done anything with such finesse and subtlety as Bale did with Fallon/Borden. Where Bill the Butcher and Daniel Plainview are forces of nature, Dicky and Fallon/Borden are human.
No one can take away what DDL has done between My Left Foot, Lincoln, and, yes, Gangs of New York and There Will Be Blood, but he's not some god among men. There are other actors out there who have been as good or better than him.
