If you wanna compare someone to DDL, make it Joaquin Phoenix, or Tom Hardy.
Yeah, I tend to come down here - Bale is good at what he does, maybe better than good, but I think that Phoenix and Hardy have more skill at the craft. Obviously, there are roles that Bale would be better at, and roles that Phoenix or Hardy would be better at.
Now - another thing, we're talking about apples to oranges - DDL is a low volume, script selective "auteur" actor who is now in his 60s. (A more apt comparison to DDL would be Brando, I would think - a different generation, of course and Brando was more likely to grab a quick paycheck, but the selectiveness, eccentricity, bordering on insanity, lower volume and reclusiveness are common traits here.)
Hardy, Bale and, to a lesser degree, Phoenix, are well regarded guys who can do lead or support roles, but are typically cast in high budget films to pay the rent and lower budget films to chase awards (and to satisfy their artistic urges), born in the mid/late 1970s.

Yeah Christian Bale goes to extremes but so does DDL...they're both extreme method actors.
For example, DDL:
– Wearing a top hat and cape at all times around New York City for the two months leading up to The Age of Innocence shoot.
– Refusing to wear a warmer coat on the set of Gangs of New York because it was not of the period. This lead to Day-Lewis contracting pneumonia. He still refused the coat, and also refused any kind of modern treatment.
– Committed to really getting into the mindset of the severely paralysed Christy Brown for My Left Foot, Day-Lewis never left his wheelchair during filming, necessitating the crew carrying him and the heavy chair everywhere on set.
– Learned to live solely off the land before and during the filming of Last of the Mohicans, going as far as refusing to eat anything he hadn’t hunted and killed himself.
– Became fluent in Czechoslovakian to play a Czech surgeon in The Unbearable Lightness of Being. It was during this shoot that he first acquired his lifelong habit of never breaking character during a shoot.

Daniel Day Lewis is over rated
Posted on 4/16/18 at 2:52 pm to Tigerbait337
Having not yet watched Phantom Thread, my answer is Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men

Michael Keaton is a better actor than Bale.
More range, and definitely a better Batman.
More range, and definitely a better Batman.

Comparing anyone to DDL is blasphemy around here, he is extremely overrated on the Movie/TV Board.
I mean you realize DDL isn't some bum that the M/TV Board discovered and gushes over for no reason. He's widely regarded by his peers as the greatest living actor and one of the greatest of all time.

Cool, he is still overrated by many on this board

I think he overacts occasionally, but he is still one of the greatest actors ever.
How many times have you watched his films and thought "he plays the same character over and over". ZERO.
He is Hawkeye
He is Bill the Butcher
He is Lincoln
He is Daniel Plainview
Saying he is over rated is simply being a contrarian.

Bale is one of the greatest of the last 20 years, but DDL is an alltime legend. The answer is no but with no disrespect to Bale's talents

When I watched Gangs of New York and There Will Be Blood, I thought Bill the Butcher and Daniel Plainview were pretty much the same character.

It's not contrarian if it's true, and he is overrated by many on this board, just read some threads about him. I'm not saying he isn't a great actor, I just don't elevate him to untouchable status like many on here

It depends on the role and the director.
How would Daniel Day Lewis do playing Batman?
For the first movie it would have been iconic. But he'd have fought tooth and nail to avoid doing a second and third movie.
Daniel Day Lewis is the better actor. Christian Bale is the more versatile actor.

This. Great actor, but he has a cult like following on this board. I love Bale and think he’s a great actor. They are right there in the conversation together as far as I’m concerned. But it’s splitting hairs.

I mean that's just retarded. I think the whole method acting thing is kind of silly in general which is why Robert Downey Jr. making fun of it in Tropic Thunder establishes him as the clear number 1.

This. He isn’t just a movie board favorite like JGL

This reminds me of that old Dustin Hoffman/Lawrence Olivier story.
Dustin Hoffman has long been known as one of method acting’s most earnest exponents. A showbiz story involves his collaboration with Laurence Olivier on the 1976 film Marathon Man.
Upon being asked by his co-star how a previous scene had gone, one in which Hoffmann’s character had supposedly stayed up for three days, Hoffmann admitted that he too had not slept for 72 hours to achieve emotional verisimilitude.
“My dear boy,” replied Olivier smoothly, “why don’t you just try acting?”

that's pretty good, definitely stealing that one. It's just ridiculous
"No dude, you don't understand, Dicaprio actually slept inside of a bear for the Revenant, you gotta see it!"
